family creative day

I invited my cousins Charlotte and Emily to come over and make valentines. I thought they might very well have other things to do, being cute college students and all, but they didn't! I asked them what their ultimate home-cooking wish would be, and they both agreed on rolls.

I started mixing up a double batch of rolls last night in my Bosch. (keep in mind that it was used when I got it and I've had it for about 15 years) All the liquid ingredients leaked out all over my counter (2 sticks of butter and milk!). The Bosch has never worked perfectly, but this was a new low. After I cleaned up the mess, I started over, this time mixing them by hand (a first).

(it cracks me up that she's always holding her hair out of her face, yet doesn't want me to put it back)

Eva helped me finish the rolls this morning. Her job was to brush each roll with melted butter and she took it very seriously. In addition, she decided that some of the rolls were girls and some were boys -- the girls were already coated in butter and therefore "sparkly" -- and that the rolls on the butcher block couldn't wait to join their friends on the baking sheet. She was cracking me up.

The result: the very best rolls I have ever made! By a mile. I don't know if it was the gentle hand mixing that produced the light fluffy texture or the extra butter that Eva put on or what, but I was very pleased. (I had been concerned that C & E would inevitably compare my rolls to their mother's, to my detriment...)

Charlotte & Emily went to town making cards. I got a call from my brother, enjoyed chatting with the girls, and snacking. I never did finalize a valentine design, but had fun nonetheless. Eva was quite taken with having more girls around and was loving the extra attention. She sat and watched them create, and even complimented their work -- she never does that with me!

Here they are clutching the extra rolls I set aside for them to take home. It was well worth the effort for that kind of excitement! Another good day.

Sounds like a grand day! The photos, so cute.

Sounds like the Bosch might be on the way out....very sad! Ryan and I decided to try your pizza recipe, although we got started quite late for a Saturday night dinner.....but it was good, indeed!
Ryan made a pesto sauce for a white pizza (Mile's request) and we made a second one with regular sauce, fresh basil and fresh tomatoe, cheese and olives.

Wish I was close enought to make valentines......

Oh! how I wish I had a knack for making fresh rolls. Sadly, I fail every time... :(

We had SO much fun today! Our rolls are hoarded away, and we gave a full account of the afternoon to Mom. Thanks so much again for inviting us over--a great way to spend a Saturday :) Love you :)

Charlotte and Emily are both so cute (it must run in the family!)

I wish I had your baking skills. Your rolls look soooo good!

Perhaps the Bosch mishap was serendipitous!

I think it's so great that you had Charlotte and Emily over for a Family Creative Day (perhaps you're starting something new) and thought to ask them what food item from home they crave the most!

isn't it funny to think you are the older Cousin who is taking care of the cute college students when we still feel young and in the need to be taken care of. (or at least i do)

I love hand mixing bread- I really do think it leaves a better product! That being said, I use my mixer a lot too :) What a great idea to have Eva brush the butter on- I will have to remember that for Mya!

And what a great idea to have a family creative day and ask them what food item they wanted. You are awesome!

So sorry about the Bosch. I love mine and it is from when my mom bought it maybe 30 years ago? I have had to replace the bowl and beaters but that is it. I am sad if yours isn't working.

Our roll recipes sounds similar. I do like how you roll yours up. I want to try that next time.

How fun and I love the one piece zip up jammies. I like that kind on Griffin too.
