sixteen

On June 24th, Max turned sixteen.

I don't know how this happened.

Yes, his voice has deepened considerably. He is 6 inches taller than me. He has big, broad shoulders and he can reach things in the high cupboards for me. He has his driver's permit.

Also, he was ordained a priest on Sunday!

But, still. How can he be sixteen?

the goods: a case for his guitar, new sheet music, 3 new ties, a t-shirt from Snowbird, a keychain from Eva, dark chocolate from Lucas ($$ from all the grandparents)

Jill & Co. brought over balloons and an iTunes gift card!

On the night of his birthday, he invited some friends over for games and a movie. We had panini, Italian sodas, and pizookies (deep-dish cookies with ice cream). They watched Strictly Ballroom.

On Sunday, we had a family party:

Max reading from the birthday book that Grandma Mim orchestrated. (She's doing them for all the birthdays this year – everyone writes a personal message.)

Grandma & Grandpa brought the birthday bear! No celebration would be complete without it.
Eva made a banner for his chocolate peanut butter cake. Not sure why we only had one candle...

This was the best of the self-portraits we attempted (Max was crouching).

If you didn't notice, I'm a bit freaked out by Max being old enough to get his driver's license, old enough to date, old enough to get a job. Only 3 years until mission age. sigh.

I'm so proud of him.

You failed to mention that we also sang to him! The poor kid is probably scarred.

I am totally freaked out that he is 16 and that the rest of the kids are headed in to that age as well.

Three years from nineteen is a sobering thought.

I do love that self-portrait of the two of you. What a handsome kid, what a pretty mom.

It's crazy how fast they go from 13 to 16! John will be 18 in six months, and that is so weird to me. But weird in a good way. It's so fun seeing John and Max grow more into themselves.

Happy birthday, Max!

And after I read the published comment, I realized that it sounded like I had a son named John. False. I have a brother named John. But you know that. Obviously.

I've been waiting for the post. He does look awfully old. And handsome. And cool. And Priestly. And righteous. And talented. And manly.

I'm happy the birthday was a fun one. three years comes around all too soon. Good and bad.

I love Max-man. I mean, I really love him. Happy Birthday to my oldest Grandson. Hmmm.Too many milestones are making me feel old this year. Now I understand what Grandma used to say about being an old person.

He seems like such a great kid! He reminds me of my 17 year old! Time passes too quickly - hang on tight!

Cute photo of the two of you!

I love the picture of the two of you, keep it close, you will cherish it.

Milestone birthdays are bittersweet, but there is much joy coming your way, as I can tell he has much to offer.

Max is so uniquely wonderful. He has so many talents and qualities that make him so much fun. I can't believe that he will go on a mission in 3 years. 3 years. Love him!

That is awesome that they watched Strictly Ballroom. Whenever people talk about regrets, I like to say that mine is that I never danced at the Pan-Pacific Grand Prix. It gets a laugh like 1/4 of the time.
