miscellaneous musings

  • Marc came home from Costco with a new product: truly authentic Belgian waffles (liègeois style). We ate them amidst waves of nostalgia for living in Paris, when we ate them every day (and Eva and Lucas largely subsisted on them). The pearl sugar – oh the pearl sugar. I did try to re-create these once with pearl sugar that I brought home from Belgium. I nearly ruined my waffle iron with burnt sugar. Now I can enjoy these delightful treats without swearing and/or harming my household appliances! Of course, Costco is rather famous for getting you hooked on a product and then suddenly not carrying it anymore...
  • I am fascinated by the new app. developed by the Catholic church to prepare its members for confession. I heard that it was the Pope's idea, that he wants to utilize technology (good call). Apparently, it helps you to examine your conscience. Huh. And to think I've been doing that the low-tech way all these years...
  • Eva has thoroughly resisted watching How to Train Your Dragon. Even though the boys told her she would like it, even though I pointed out that it is a favorite of Whitney's (one of her idols), she would have nothing to do with it. We got it from Redbox (free valentine code, don't you know), and the kids watched it while we were out. Not surprisingly, she loved it and has already drawn quite a few dragons. Do I sense a new possible obsession? Perhaps a better question would be: why must my children persist in not listening to me?
  • Max has been receiving information from different colleges every day, presumably because he did well on the PSAT. It's kind of freaking me out.
  • Of all the spam comments I receive, I would estimate that 95% of them are on my post entitled "Fun Friday & Fall Festival." They are invariably written in some Asian language, I'm not sure which. Is alliteration irresistible to the Chinese/Japanese?

Oh no. Dinosaurs might be replaced by dragons? What is the world coming to?

Colleges begging for your kids -- it's a feel good experience, don't you think? Your mailbox should be full for three years.

I'll have to try the waffles. Sadly, my palate is unrefined. It has definitely never tried pearl sugar.

That's crazy that Costco is now carrying those waffles...I don't suppose they have the ones with chocolate on one side do they?

I heard about that new app on NPR and thought it was interesting yet strange...the questions were very thorough!

I'm so glad Eva watched that movie, it seems like a natural favorite for her.

The college letters freak me out too, he's going to be making that decision for real in no time!

I never get spam comments.

I wrote a post 2 years ago that is titled "Emily Post would be proud" which is the target of those very same Asian spam commenters!

Those waffles ARE amazing. I look for samples of them every time I go to Costco. Sorry you almost ruined your waffle maker once upon a time. I've used pearl sugar in mine with no problems! Huh, weird.

One of my favorite memories is of me standing in the middle of the Grand Place in Brussels eating a fresh, hot belgium waffle dipped in chocolate dripping down my hand...I love love love those things and regret not ever thinking to the purchase the authentic pearl sugar while I was there.

When I was in NYC recently, I noticed a Belgium waffle street vendor...They were almost as good, but I missed the quaintness of Brussels...

I really dislike how costco randomly drops items. One of my favorite things, Olay dry cleansing cloths, I have purchased for years - Now they are gone!

I'm excited to hear Eva tell me about dragons. BYU needs a dragon museum!
