in search of good hair

As usual, I'm debating about what I should do with my hair.

I absolutely loved Mia's (before she shaved it off). Loved Ellenore's, too, (from So You Think You Can Dance) -- can you believe I can't find any decent photos of her?

And on the other end of the spectrum:

Love Kyra Sedgwick's in The Closer. Love everything about that show, actually.

So you can see my problem. These styles could not be more different from each other, yet I love them both.

Ah, who am I kidding? My hair would never be so cooperative as to bend to my will either way, so the question is moot.

Oh, and don't even get me started on the color question...

And yet I can't seem to give up. I am forever in search of good hair.

As a curly-haired person who tried to pull off a faux hawk a few years ago, I'm telling you this from the depth of my soul -- Do not do it. Do not. The styling has to be spot on every single day to make it look half way decent. And you always have to wear it straight, there are no curly options with that style. Man, I wanted that style to work for me, but it's just not in the cards. Unless, that is, you're Oprah and you have a professional stylist blowing out, flat ironing, and styling your hair every single day. So sad, I really wanted that faux-hawk.

I think the best option is to grow it out, that's what I'm trying to do now. Have you seen Design Mom's hair? It's one way to go with long curly hair that has a style to it. Her hair isn't very thick though, but I still think it can work.

Anyhow, I've committed myself to growing my hair out to a certain length, then worrying about a style. When it's long the curls and general bulk are weighed down a bit more and make things more manageable.

As for color, I always love your hair when it's that dark auburn. Looks great with your eyes.

I like it when you have long hair. Your curls are always pretty, plus it looks great when you straighten it as well. I think long hair makes you look younger. Maybe you should go through your Smugmug photos and pull out pictures where you actually like your hair then see what length you tend to gravitate to most.

I also love Mia and Ellenore's hair styles and would love to copy them. I'm afraid though that it's deceptively simple, and that it would be much to difficult to make my hair look like theirs.

I think we're all forever in search of good hair. How frustrating!

the quest for good hair, at least for me, is a never ending battle.
so is my quest for the perfect purse. although, i am loving vera bradley lately.

as far as hair goes, i would say any time i've done anything too trendy i've ended up regreting it a few days or weeks later. it's hard to maintain long term trendiness with hair because you can't switch it around like a scarf. i say, longish is always a lovely bet.

good luck, and when you find the answer, post about it please!

I have to admit- as sassy as your short hair is, I like it longer too. But waiting for hair to grow out is on the list of official ways to torture a woman. Good Luck!

I always want my hair super short (it makes having curly hair so easy), and I always like it in the mirror...then I see a photo and realize how fat I look...but maybe I look that way with long hair too? I am currently having that internal battle right now because I don't love my current length, etc.

For the record, I think you always look stylish in the photos I see!

I sure wish I knew how to do my hair. I just wasn't blessed in this dept. My girls like to remind me of this also. I would love for my hair to look like Kyra's. I do like my hair longer since I feel younger with it longer and I think it makes my face look thinner? I need all the help I can get.

I'm with Rebekah - grow it out - let it be the curly girl it wants to be. Fighting it is just frustrating!

Ah--the age-old question of hairstyle. I'm grappling with it myself, as I have recently gone considerably shorter and am wondering if it was the right choice. I've had one person tell me that having long hair ages me, and another who says that short on me is not her favorite. *sigh* I guess in the end it's like Grandma always says, "It only has to be okay with you (and the Lord)." And I don't think He really cares how I wear my hair.

My girls had a book by Jamie Lee Curtis about moods -- I am totally spacing the title. Anyway, there is this one page where the little girl is frustrated by her hair and she says, "Should I cut it or grow it? Oh what should I do?" I constantly have that struggle myself. It seems like once I get it past the annoying growing out stage, I cut it short again. Right now I'm trying to grow it, and I am liking it okay, but I am really not liking my color -- I just haven't found someone good with that since I moved here. I wish it was feasible to go to Portland every few months to get it done, but you know, reality and all.

I don't know about your first picture as I don't know that girl, but I don't love that particular picture of her hair -- maybe it's her odd expression at that moment, though, too. Kyra's though -- swoon! I have no idea how one makes curls like that. Good luck to you! It's crazy how frustrating hair can be.

How does Kyra do it ???
And are you now on late church? (judging from your 'leave a comment' comment) We changed over to 1pm in January and it is messing with my Sunday dinners.

It must be the bain of 9 out of 10 women! I like the idea of looking at past photos and seeing what you like!

As for me, I just spent $285.00 for cut and color (oh, dee...) and I hate it! I spent the time to research ideas with photos, presented them to my stylist. He agreed that they were all variations on a theme of what I currently had, and agreed that he liked what I had! So basically, I was just expecting a minor variation on that! 2 hours later, I have a Halle Berry haircut (crop, pixie...whatever!)Buy, I assure you that I do not have a Halle Berry face!!!! I absolutely hate it and after two weeks, cannot get over the price, the unexpected shortness (after NOT discussing it!). He cut it so short that he couldn't really put any foils in, so painted the color on...I complained at the time and he just said how cute it was!! Not even an offer for a haircut on him (IF I ever go back, that is, after 4-5 months growing time!

Hair woes.....the worst!

As for your hair, I like it any way that you do it. But then, I'm "the mother"...I guess there are advantages to having longer hair, like clipping it up.

Good luck!

I feel I'm always in search of good hair too. Good Luck with your decision. I like your hair long, but you know you only live once so you might as well have fun with it.

ps i love the closer too.

I hate making hair decisions. I usually stay on the safe side and keep my hair pretty much the same: long and dark brown. I've had a friend all but tell me that she hates my hair dark, but whatever. I'm not one for taking hair risks.

I vote long too. You have really good curls. I am boring and don't really try to change it up because on the longer side it is all the same (with my hair) and I have a fear of looking like Annie (or worse!) with short hair so I don't feel like there are a lot of options.

Mostly I wish I could get up in the morning and look decent. I do not!

Anyway... I'm not adventurous and not willing to fight the curls with it shorter so there you have my non-decision.

Good luck.

The love-hate relationship with hair. Seriously, I don't think people understand what curly hair does to you. So difficult because you can't always choose the style you like b/c your hair simply won't comply! If you check my blog, you'll see that I chopped mine this weekend. Totally have the same debate as you- if I could have Kyra's hair, I would. But my hair doesn't grow that long and it would never look like that (without extensions). Therefore, the decision is simple. Option#1 for me. Good luck with your hair woes!
