cook's assistant

I'm used to occasionally having a helper while baking, but now the tables have turned and I'm the cook's assistant.

Max got this cookbook for Christmas and has spent a lot of time poring over it, making lists of recipes he wants to try and specialty ingredients we need to track down.

First up was gyoza with dipping sauce.

It ended up taking a lot longer than we anticipated -- 2 hours! But it was delicious.

Next, we made chicken ramen. It was quick, easy, and very tasty.

In an unrelated note, Max left me sweet thank-you notes all around the house.

I keep finding more every day -- in the dryer, in a pocket of my purse, under a book on my nightstand, etc. At least 16 so far!

Maybe moms do get accolades every now and again...

I think it's so sweet that he put those notes all over the house, what a great thing for him to do!

I'm impressed with the cooking, but would not be keen on spending 2 hours cooking.

I want singing bread!

I love that boy more every time I see him...or should I say young man.

Both recipes look awesome...maybe it will be Max on Food Network.

I am making gyoza for my daughters class in about a month when the do a unit on Japan. We love it, but it does take a long time.

Those notes make me want to cry. I can't believe a teenage boy would do that. You must be doing something very very right!

Once again:

I reserve Max for an arranged marriage to Isabelle. I call him.

What a sweet young man that Max is!!

Griffin received lots of baking gifts for Christmas but has been sick so we have yet to try most of them out.

A friend of mine was just telling me today about that book! She couldn't stop raving about it!

Is gyoza the same thing as a pot stiker? I'm impressed that you made them from scratch...Our New Year's dinner was Costco's pre-packaged potstickers and pre-packaged spring rolls...You put me to shame!

I cannot get over the utter awesomeness that is MAX! He's a keeper! I think I would die a happy woman if any of my kids did something like that...

Ahhhh...Crystal! I call Max for Posey. Is he too old? She's 9.

Those are the sweetest, nicest notes.

Love Wagamama. Only 90 minutes away from our house!

ooh. I'm crazy about Japanese food. And those pot stickers look so delicious! So fun to have someone else putting in the kitchen time in your own home, I'm sure.

The hidden notes are an absolute treasure.

Where do you go for unique ingredients? I'll have to start a list of ingredients to ask you about from my new cook books. Lets start with shallots and scallions. Pretty sure I've eaten both but have no idea what they are or where to get them. Is one like a green onion?

That is such a testament to your mothering Michelle. What a gift!!

I want that bread to sing to me as well!

As long as it isn't talking to you. That's when the special jacket comes out...

That food looks ridiculously good. Another cookbook to add to my 'someday I'll have a kitchen again' wishlist.

I was in Chinatown a few weeks ago and saw that we are getting a Wagamamas. I am very excited to try it now, but I'm bringing my own bag...@#$&!

I want a MAX at my house! He sounds awesome. I love that he is so into cooking and baking. Everything he does seems to come out well (but maybe you haven't documented the failures! LOL)

Those notes are adorable. They have NO idea how much we love those, as mothers, do they? Austin wrote me one the other day and I was in tears!

wow c'est un "true" monsieur. I think this is a testament to your mothering. I would be totally blown away. And yum yum yum yum. THE RAMEN SOUP. About 5 months ago, maybe more, we rented the RAMEN GIRL with Brittney Murphy (most 3/4 of it, ends up with subtitles). I think it was a wonderful wonderful film to be seen, specially when it has a moral to the story. Now, it might not be a PG or PG 13.... of sorts... I just don't go by ratings others make...when I feel I can make my own discernment's as to what is uplifting or not. Especially for me and my family. But I do have a special place for RAMEN now after the film. And gyoza, I think I can eat it soo much faster than what it takes to make, LATELY i HAVE BEEN craving the dumplings at CPK the appetizers....or the ones they used to have in CHINA LILLY in Utah (they had this delicious red/really peppery hot sauce).....

I love Max! That's the sweetest thing.

And what's the recipe for the chicken Ramen? Do you use regular Ramen noodles and add stuff to it? I have some noodle packets that could definitely use some spicing up.

Love you!
