Books 2009 -- #7

People of the Book: A Novel People of the Book: A Novel by Geraldine Brooks

rating: 3 of 5 stars

I'd really give this book something like 3.5 stars. I was fascinated by the whole book restoration process, as well as the clues to the book's history that were manifest by tiny artifacts found within. The sections where we are taken back in time to follow the book and to learn more about the "people of the book" are much more interesting than the modern sections, because the character of Hanna, though sympathetic, is ultimately just not that compelling.

Definitely worth a read, but somewhat disappointing coming from the author of Year of Wonders.

I'm having a hard time pin pointing why I didn't like this book very much. I enjoyed reading it, but was frustrated by the main character and by the time line (it was confusing). The ending line was so cheesy that it wrecked it for me.
