1. I was mailing some packages at my local grocery store the other day, and I noticed a dispenser of cigarette wrappers behind the counter. I hadn't seen it before, and I wondered how big the demand was for cigarette wrappers in our area. I asked the customer service manager about it, and she laughed. Evidently they've sold 3 since they installed the display in May.
2. As I was reading bedtime stories with Eva, I selected a library book as a possibility. She informed me that, "Dad read that book to me recently." I just looked at her and said, "Did you just say recently?" How does she learn these words without my knowledge?
3. She also informed me that things "creep her out" sometimes. Oh yes, I am aware of that.
4. She was watching a show on Nick Jr. and said, "Mom, that's more protein for me." I just looked at her in bafflement, because although I would love to see her incorporate more protein in her diet, I could not see the relationship between protein and Nick Jr. She informed me that that means she really really likes the show. Okaaaaay.
5. I saw a commercial late last night where a man names Tom Kruse was selling some product or other. I wonder what it's like going through life with a name like that?
6. Yesterday Max was trying to figure out what to wear for the fashion show in his French class tomorrow (they have to practice describing articles of clothing). He came out in the outfit he was planning to wear, and Marc and I thought it was great -- for a crazy, funny fashion show. Then we found out that he was considering wearing it to school all day. Ummm...
Marc expressed privately to me the opinion that they must not shove people into lockers in junior high anymore. We gently guided him towards a more, say, coordinated outfit. He was a little upset and said, "I have no fashion sense!"
Well, that's just patently untrue. But I wonder how many boys in junior high say things like that? I found out yesterday that his best friend will only wear solid t-shirts. No prints, no designs of any kind. Plain t-shirts. (kinda sounds like me in seventh grade, huh, Mom?)
By the way, Max and Lucas both like to watch Project Runway with us. I guess their sense of fashion will be continually developing!
7. Lucas wants to be Luke Skywalker for Halloween. I made a Luke costume for Max when he was 4. Too bad it won't fit Lucas, but it does speak to the enduring nature of Star Wars.
8. Eva is the biggest Chatty Cathy I've ever met, yet she absolutely refuses to tell me what she does at preschool. I know she enjoys it, but other than that, mum's the word. Well, color me surprised.
9. Jessie told me about this conversation that occurred when Bella came to the hospital to meet baby Fiona:
Timm: Careful, honey, don't get too close. (Bella had a cold.)
Bella: I just want to pet my baby sister, but Daddy said I'm too gross!!

"Color me surprised"! I'm going to have to remember that phrase.
When do you leave to care for Feona...I mean Jesse?
I'm often surprised by the words Eva knows and the context she uses them in, but then again, all your kids have had highly developed vocabularies at young ages. The sound of Max's 2 year old voice saying "It's a bidet" is burned on my brain.
this is a great post!
funny my boys were ten times more particular about their clothes & hair than my girls - what's up with that? They are all macho, but then don't mess with the wrong hair gel or jeans...
we often comment that in our town if you see someone smoking while you're driving - it's so shocking we do double takes... funny utah living.
That's too funny about Bella thinking Timm said she was "gross!"
I made a really cool Jedi warrior cape for John when he was in 3rd or 4th grade. If Lucas would be interested in borrowing that, I could try and track it down from the last friend who borrowed it. I also have a cool Dracula costume that would probably fit him (complete with a very dramatic, swishingly-long red lame-lined cape), but if he already has his heart set on something else, I suppose there's no talking him into it. I just feel a motherly obligation to share any and all Halloween costumes, possibly saving another mother hassle and despair!
I love it when kids use big, unexpected words. It is so darn cute.
Daniel doesn't like to talk about preschool either. He usually just tells me "I don't want to talk about it right now." Hmmm.
Love the Halloween costume idea. And it's true: Star Wars is practically timeless!
recently is my favorite :).
Although the fashion sense is pretty good too.
i need to do more "regular life" posts like this - this is the kind of thing you will really appreciate having written down later! eva is such a crack up! i love that she doesn't want to tell you anything about preschool - maybe she is living a double life!
my boys are way harder to dress than allie. taylor wants to wear only polo shirts most of the time. whatever.
Eva is so funny--that's hilarious that she knows the word "recently." And that conversation between Timm and Bella made me laugh out loud!
This whole post was protien to me! How wonderful. All of these reasons to smile. Your Eva is such a doll. I love reading about her and her little personality!
It's funny when little ones pick up on big words. I remember when megan starting using "actually" correctly and it cracked me up.
I just got bravo so now I can watch project runway. When I've seen it I love it. It's good to see some boys with a desire for fashion sense. It doesn't happen nearly enough.
love the photo of the little toys and bella's comment cracks me up. have fun with Jessie this next week.
I love this list of interesting things from your week. Eva is such a cute girl!
I love the "recently" addition to her vocab.
As far as having "no fashion sense," it breaks my heart to hear the frustration behind that - like when a child gets that they don't quite get it, and I know how that feels all the day long. You are sweet parents.
This was so funny. I need to do more posts like this. I absolutely LOVE Eva saying "recently". I love when they do that. Yesterday Ashley told Austin to get down b/c it was "dangerous" and it killed me. They are sponges.
Hey Michelle,
You don't know me, but I'm a cousin of Diana's and have become friends with Jessie through our blogs. Anyway, I was wondering if you'd e-mail me more about the 12 dates of Christmas you did for your hubby? I think that would be a great idea to do this year...maybe for our anniversary next month even. Can you e-mail me some details and/or pictures and what it calls for, the ideas, etc. Thanks a lot!

The big words are one of my favorite things about seeing them grow up. Eva is so articulate and opinionated, I love it. Mya is chatty as well, but will barely tell me a thing about her classes. Dad and Grandma get all the info.
