happy birthday, Dad!

Yesterday was my dad's birthday. I looked back in my archives to see what I've posted about him before, and I found this post:
Sneelock
and his comment:

I am thinking that when I retire, I may retire from Sneelock-hood as well :) Then for breakfast every morning I can have green eggs and ham. I may even get a star upon thar!

By the way...I have always felt that service is the true expression of love. With a great family, how could one not serve??

Seriously. That post and that comment just sum him up, in my opinion. But here are a few more pertinent facts for good measure:
He reads and even occasionally comments on my blog!

He spent a lot of time with me when I was growing up. I always remember him as being the one who gave me baths and read me bedtime stories. He played golf with me in the backyard and took me with him on many of his drives to check the soybean and alfalfa fields (for his work).

He has that stereotypical dad humor (read: puns) -- in fact, he's the master.

He passed on his unruly hair to me. He assures me that I'll be glad when I'm 60.

He is completely comfortable with my mom's family and enjoys spending time with them.

He takes good care of himself. He is actively safeguarding his health so he can have a long life and enjoy it. For my own selfish reasons, I'm glad! (and he does seem younger than his 62 years)

He grew up in the Mexican colonies and is a native Spanish speaker. Now he gives talks occasionally in a Spanish-speaking ward.

He is an involved grandfather. He holds the babies, he plays with the kids. He talks to them, and listens to them. He helped Max learn to ride a bike, he drew a line with Lucas in sidewalk chalk all around the neighborhood, he takes the kids crabbing at the beach. He sometimes stays with the kids so the women can go shopping (even though he likes to go shopping too, especially if it's to T.J.Maxx).

He is very self-sacrificing (see Sneelock). He gives generously of his time, his talents, his sleep, and his means.

He got me a job with his company for my first summer home from college. We went to lunch together frequently. Once we went to the mall for lunch and couldn't remember where we parked the car. We looked at each other and gleefully wondered if someone stole the car! (it was a death trap) We eventually found it, to our mutual disappointment.

He has rediscovered his love of photography. I'm so glad he can have the nice camera he wants -- he deserves it! He has even gone on some cool photography trips, and is planning another to Italy.

He falls asleep almost immediately whenever he sits down.

He is content with a very simple life (but with my mom around, that's not likely to happen!).

He has changed jobs many times, and even changed careers completely a few years ago.

He eats 3 bananas for breakfast, every day. The produce guys at the grocery store know him.

He makes family a priority. He and my mom visited us twice in Paris!

His father died while he was on his mission and he didn't get to attend the funeral. From what I've heard, he was a great man and I can't wait to meet him. My dad admired him greatly and always gets choked up when he talks about him.

I've rarely heard him raise his voice. He didn't need to, we always knew where he stood.

He gives the best back rubs in the world.

He's gentle.

He's a good-looking guy.

I love you, Dad!

He is a good-looking guy! I love to hear daughters talk about their dads- there is just something so touching about it to me when you can tell they adore their dad. I love how you said he never needed to raise his voice because you always knew where he stood. Powerful. Hope he had a great birthday at Jessie's house!

I've said it many times, and I'll say it again. You have amazing parents. Though I see as lot of similarities between your dad and mine so I'm not quite as jealous of him as I am of your mom! ;) Happy Birthday to your dad!

It is so great to get this kind of stuff written down. He does sound like he lives a younger life than his calendar age.

I am the lucky recepient of his constant service and adorement!

He seldom raises his voice or tires or endlessly helping with Black-eyed Susan tasks, deliverys and occasional funding!

He is the best sneelock ever, and I personally hope that never retires!

He is and will always be my standard or unconditional love and service.
