lipstick: a tutorial

{Michelle is wearing MaryKay Signature lipstick in Shell}

You asked for it! (Well, somebody did, I can't remember who now.)

It's embarrassingly simple. It probably doesn't even really qualify as a tutorial. But here you go:

I use Revlon ColorStay lip liner in Nudes. It seems to go with whatever lipstick I use (of course, that may have something to do with the fact that I am always drawn to nude colors in lipstick).

...and I do love lipstick. I have Estée Lauder (Sultry Blush, NYC Pink, Beige, Rose Sapphire -- sadly, discontinued), MaryKay (Shell), Mac (Delish), Ulta, Revlon (Fleshtone)...

I never use the ones that are supposed to last and last because they just feel so dry and weird to me. I stick with the regular creamy formulas, sometimes flat, sometimes with shimmer, and with the liner they just stay put.

I occasionally use a little gloss (MaryKay or Revlon LipGlide), but not the super shiny ones, they don't last more than about 15 minutes. I like the way they look, but I am not really a primper, I don't reapply my makeup (unless I'm going out at night, then I might touch up) so I have to go with something that will stick around.

That's it! Pretty basic, eh? So do you have any good color/brand recommendations for me?

{this is how my lipstick wears -- always. Plus, it's uneven from one side to the other. Is that weird?}

Oh the dramas of lipstick. It never lasts more than hour, liner or not, and I'm not a reapplier either. I do have this ultradark red that will last a few hours, but it's pretty intense. I personally like reds, but it's whatever works for you. My favorite Estee Lauder Spiced Cider gift w/ purchase I finally threw out after 10 years.
I just stopped to apply some lipgloss :). I started wearing the elf flavored lipglosses because I'll reapply like wearing chapstick, but they don't last more than a few minutes so sad. But I do love the picture of you applying lipstick. Very cool.

Love the tutorial. Mine doesn't stay on long and I know it's cause I use glossy stuff. I love the metallic lip liner Mary Kay used to have and now they don't carry it. I have to buy it on ebay now and when everyone's supply runs out, I'll be on the lookout for something new.

Google 'Lipstick Personality Test'(a few sites come up, the first one shows pictures, ha). It's hilarious and for most people I know, it's fairly accurate. It's shows all the shapes people wear their lipstick down with. Apparently by personality type, lipstick wears differently. When I worked in a salon with 10 women, our tubes were all shaped different and it was right for all of us! Too funny and weird all at the same time. After someone showed us this, we were checking out everyone's lipstick that was getting their hair done. Man, we must have been bored that day!

My favorite is a sheer lipstick by Aveda that they don't make anymore--bummer. I also like my Mac lipstick. But I'm not a huge lipstick person--it always comes off. Next time I get out I'll have to get that lipliner!

I think I'm destined to have lipstick woes. The one I use now (recommended by Amie) is actually the best one I've ever had, but I still wish it would stay on longer. It doesn't seem to work with lip liner though.

You are a lucky girl, you always have perfectly primped lips!

I'm a little jealous of your abilities to get lipstick to stay on!

I have the palest lips in the history of humans, but unfortunately, no matter what extreme steps I take, I can't get any sort of lipstick to stay on for more than 5 minutes. It mainly has to do with the fact that I am always either touching or sucking on my lips. It's such a bad habit.

I've started using Benefit's Benetint for cheeks and lips. It's a stain, which gives a subtle flush on my cheeks and makes my lips look like they belong to someone living, instead of a corpse like normal. I ususally follow that up with a gloss which I apply liberally every hour or so(I'm totally obsessed).

Thanks for sharing!!!

Mine never lasts through my 1st Coke Zero!

This was a fun post! I agree that the official lasting lipsticks are too dry and uncomfortable.
You are the lipstick expert in my life now, after seeing your stash!
I own 3-5 lipsticks, maybe?
I always wear mine down flat, and I hate a new lipstick because of the angle of the tip!

You do always have flawless make-up and I have often thought 'how does she do it?" Your lip color is perfect, too. Thanks for the post! Very fun!

This is great- I have never seen so many lipsticks outside of a store- heeee. You have the most beautiful lips, so it only makes sense that you know how to make them rock. I have two sticks of lipstick and I honestly only know where one of them is. I am really going to try your method- as I am one of the ones that requested a tutorial! I just need to read up on how to pick a good shade. I am hopeless in the make-up department.

fun post! i'm drawn to the nude and browner shades also. i've been meaning to replace my liner for months now. so aggravating!!

i'm tempted to do a challenge on just exactly how each woman's lipstick wears down. isn't it funny that we all seem to have a signature that way?

My all time favorite, go to in a pinch lipstick is Mary Kay Shell. It seems to be just the right nude/slight mauve and it lasts a long time. I use either the Dusty Pink or Neutral MK lipliner.

I like MAC too in Syrup and Twig, but I might check out Delish. The MAC counter is some sort of paradise isn't it? An expensive paradise, but still...

Those are some nice plump, unlined (the feathery type!) lips!!

Kisses to you.

Btw, the mary kay metallic lip pencil from Ebay might be a nice birthday suggestion for me......

Great idea! And, a personal favorite!

I am a huge Benefit make-up fan. I enjoyed this tutorial. Strangely enough, I just bought some longlasting Maybelline lipstick for my show and I was surprised my lips weren't that dry- I think it is new. Longlasting gloss or something? It lasted twelve hours. Insane.

My lipsticks look like that too (slanted).
I always wear the "gift with purchase" lipsticks rather than go searching for one, which is why I don't have a signature color. I should really find MY color, I would probably wear lipstick more often and I should be wearing it all the time because I have been told I look like "death warmed over" without it (I have pale lips).

Loved the info, I am inspired to go on a lipstick search.

this is a scrapbook page waiting to happen. some day your little girl is going to just eat this post up. it's a perfect little window into your cute, crooked tube of lipstick self. love it.

Oh, I love to see another lipstick addict! Along with shoes, lipstick is my sure fire shopping trick that will never make you feel fat. If you like neutral shades... might I suggest M.A.C. stone liner. But my FAVE is Chestnut. That is my liner of choice that I wear with every single color lipstick I own.

Oh you know I love lipstick talk... yours always looks so great, love it.

When I used to use "real" lipstick mine always wore in a similar shape as yours does... I enjoyed it.
