Probably my favorite thing about motherhood is observing my children interacting with each other and caring for each other.
This morning, Lucas wasn't feeling well. He was curled up in a chair, and Eva was very concerned about him. She set out to try and make him feel better.
Eva: "How are you feeling, Lucas?"
Lucas: "not so good..."
Eva: "Oh, poor little guy. Do you have a headache?"
Lucas: "Yes, and my stomach hurts."
Eva: "You just need to burp, Lucas, then your tummy will feel better!"
She then proceeded to curl up next to him and give him hugs and kisses. When he still wasn't responding by feeling better, she galloped down the hall to get some books and returned to "read" to him. I just stood in the kitchen listening to whole conversation and feeling happy. (When Lucas started throwing up, I had to insist that Eva leave him alone. Snuggling and hugs & kisses are off-limits for the time being.)
Since she couldn't offer her consolation to Lucas anymore, she wandered over and found Max making graphs on the computer. She climbed up on his lap and gave him advice on what colors his graphs should be. She loves her big brothers.
Witnessing these small, daily, loving interactions makes me feel like I'm doing something right. They know how to be nice to each other! They know how to care about someone else. It is so gratifying.
On another note, the cutest thing happened today in Primary. It was singing time, and we were playing "Name That Tune", with a twist. I would start playing a melody, starting with just 2 or 3 notes, and whenever the children recognized the song, they were supposed to stand up. I would then play a little more, and a little more, until all the children were standing. Then we would sing the song.
When we got to I Am a Child of God, I played the first 3 notes. One of our new Sunbeams (3 years old) stood right up and belted out the entire first verse. It was hilarious and adorable, all at the same time. She showed such enthusiasm and was so earnest, it was one of those priceless moments where you just want to jump up and shout, "I love Primary!". (Today is so much better than yesterday!)

That picture is darling! What a sweet little Eva. You have really great boys- You're right- you are doing something right!
That's so cute! I hope that my future children will develop those relationships with each other--I love having my siblings as my best friends!
Good brother and sister moments like these are a form of parental paydays. It's such a blessing to have your kids get alone well and love each other so much!
Love the story about the Sunbeam. Sunbeams are so adorable!
Sorry to hear Lucas is sick! Ick! We are getting over that nastiness here finally, crossing my fingers.
I love that Eva was so sweet and concerned about him.
I'm glad today is better than yesterday, even with a sick Lucas. Eva's comforts were just too cute. Her burping advice was hilarious.
Cute sunbeam story, too!
I knew we were kindred spirits! I just knew it! Those mommy moments are my favourite. If I can hear them laughing, playing, sharing, talking and loving I am a happy woman!
Oh - I read your post from yesterday and laughed (sorry!) about the part with you cold, wet, and in pain, comforting your perfectly fine but upset child. I am laughing because a very similar situation happened with us a few months ago. There I was on the ground, in pain, patting my son's back and telling him not to cry. Motherhood!
this is how children (and sunbeams) say thank you for being a good mom. great photograph! this is something they both will treasure when they're adults. big brothers are the best!
Your kids are adorable.
I love Eva's nurturing instincts. So cute!
I love it when the kids are so cute in Primary. My Primary day was not so fun, unfortunately.
How sweet! I was just thinking nearly the same thing on Saturday about Alex and Kaitlin. Alex has started wanting to do everything that Kaitlin does. It's so adorable to see him running after her wherever she goes. Fortunately she doesn't mind--yet.
I am just catching up on a week's worth of posts...so sorry about your knee and your spill on the ice. Not fun. So glad you got such good paychecks today...from your kids and at Primary. Somedays it is so easy to see that we really do have the best dang job in the whole world!
oh i love that little eva is mothering after you. i adore the interactions and hearing my girls together. your post was beautifully written!
Your boys will be blessed by their loving little sister their whole lives. They are lucky to have her!
What a sweet story. Aren't those moments so tender? There is something realy special about having the bog age gap between older sibs and "the baby". Griffin is a favorite in our house and already at 14 months seems to be very in tune with al of our particular moods and feelings and can offer a love when necessary. Love these guys!
These moments are the joy of motherhood for me.
it doesn't take much for me to jump up and shout- I love primary!!
And I love how your children interact- I hope someday it happens with mine.
