At the beginning of 2006, I intended to read 50 books during the year. At the end of the year, I was distressed to find that I had only read 23! At the beginning of 2007, I didn't set a goal number, but I think I was secretly still shooting for 50.
I just tallied them up, and while I didn't get to 50, I did much better than last year -- 39!
I read a lot of good books last year. Here are my favorites:
The Education of Little Tree -- Forrest Carter
As A Man Thinketh -- James Allen
The Giver -- Lois Lowry
Charms For the Easy Life -- Kaye Gibbons
Suite Française -- Irene Nemirovsky
The Glass Castle -- Jeannette Walls
The Bright Forever -- Lee Martin
Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life -- Amy Krause Rosenthal
The Thirteenth Tale -- Diane Setterfield
The Samurai's Garden -- Gail Tsukiyama
Gift From the Sea -- Anne Morrow Lindbergh
The Book Thief -- Markus Zusak
I've decided I don't need to give myself a reading goal this year. I read for pleasure, and I want to make sure it remains purely a pleasure! What good books did you read in 2007?

I read the Book Thief also this year; a book club selection, not mine, but I loved it also. I loved the narrative, and I loved the story. I could have read much more.
I haven't read a lot of books I loved this year. But I have read a bunch, and I have read lots of different genres. That was my goal.
I was looking at my stack of unread books yesterday (after putting some new ones away), and thought I should have a goal of reading all the unread books on my shelf in 2008. Until I totaled them up, and there are 55 books. Not going to happen unless I give up all other interests, laundry and child rearing. I tend to get really consumed with books, and then can't function because all I do is read. My goal this year was to learn to read in moderation -- I previously would only let myself read on vacations, and I think I've done a good job of that. But, I would definitely like to read more books in 2008 than I did in 2007. I did love almost every book I read, though -- My favorites being History of Love and Gilead.
My favorites from this year were The Kite Runner and The History of Love.
Reading is all-consuming for me and so I, like Kelly, have to give up everything else to do it...even this holiday I only got to read one page of the new book my husband gave me. I've got to find a quiet afternoon sometime soon!
i did not read that much, nothing like my first year of blogging when you and jill got me hooked.
my must have by my bedside was this pioneer history book which was awesome.
you are officially my reading hero!!! i love seeing what books others read b/c i get limited time to pick and read one, so it's nice to see someone who reads so much and is willing to share the titles! plus, i get to live vicariously through them. :)
I know what you mean because I tend to think I read at least 52 books a year, but then realize I don't read a book a week every week. I'm also not as good at keeping track of what I read as I'd like to be so I'm sure I forget books here and there. Ugh. I don't want to give myself a set number of books to shoot for either because reading a great pleasure of mine and shouldn't be a job.
I like your list of books you enjoyed from this year and will have to read the few I haven't already read.
I kept a list of book for most of last year, but sometime in September I just stopped writing it down. Who am I trying to impress anyway? This year, I want to write about the books I read in my journal more, but I don't need a definitive list of what I've read. Good attitude--it should be fun and enjoyable. We're not in school anymore!
Your new banner is just about killing me it is SO awesome! And I love the you can say you read for pleasure. I unfortunately sit in front of a tv that I don't care about and can't get up. So, reading is one of my goals this year!
Favorites from 2007 include Harry Potter 7, Devil in the White City and the Thirteenth Tale.
Great list! I liked Suite Francaise, but I never finished it. Jill mentioned The Book Thief too, I really want to check that one out soon.
I wish I had an unlimited amount of time to read with no other distractions or responsibilities--can't we find that somewhere?
My favorites this year you have probably read:
These Is My Words
Angle of Repose
The History of Love
Water for Elephants
Happy reading!
oooo...
I've never set a number goal for myself before. Two years ago I wanted to read more (I wasn't reading at all at that point) and started up my bookclub. It has been great, and I am guarenteed to read at least one book/month. I'm interested in the number goal though. Maybe I'll do one. 24 sounds good to me. That would be my bookclub book, plus one more each month. Interesting.
Thanks for the inspiration!
I linked you to my blog today. Do you mind?
Not nearly enough that's for sure. I need to do better, I do enjoy reading.
how do you do it, make your blog better and better every season!
I read kind of lot this year and some books that I didn't think I'd like but tried them out anyways.
I haven't counted them up because I really don't want it to feel like a chore but to read for pleasure.
ok, i'm way behind, so i'm just making a collective comment on this one post. first of all- i love the 'previously unreleased' SP you posted! All of them look great and are good refute to your claim that you are not photogenic.
i am glad your heat/electricity debacle is over. it sounded like a literary-type experience to be told for years.
good job with the books! My goal was also 50, and i think i got to like, 43. I'm shooting for 50 this year too. Thanks for many suggestions and some of my favorite reads!
Thanks for the great list- I am looking for some books for my book club!
My favorite book this year was A Shepherd Looks At Psalm 23. I also really liked a book called The Prize Winner from Defiance Ohio.
Happy Reading!!
I counted the pages I read in 2007 and was about 800 pages less than 2006. I was a bit dismayed but want to do better this year. I also want to read a broader selection (i.e. business, money).
I average about a book a week, but with everything this year, and those few month were I couldn't focus because of the meds, well I just stopped counting and it feels so good. I read so many GREAT books this year- a love affair indeed!
I can't believe I have read so many on your list! It always seems like you have read all the best things that I am just hearing about. But I love that you posted your favs, gives me more to put on my list for 2008!
Thanks for posting the list of books. I am always looking for good ideas for myself and some to suggest for my bookclub.
Hope things are going more smoothly around there now! You must be toasty and warm :-)
James Allen's book As a Man Thinketh is one of my favorites.
