sounds of Paris

I've been thinking about some of the sounds of Paris... some I will miss -- others, definitely not.
  • Rumblings of the Metro underneath our apartment
  • The chimes preceding a Metro announcement we can sometimes hear through the windows
  • Pigeons (cooing? Is that what pigeons do?) waking me too early in the morning
  • Many different languages we hear tourists speaking
  • Voice lessons given by someone in an apartment behind us (group lessons on Saturdays!)
  • Piano concertos played by, I assume, the same music teacher
  • French children calling me "Madame"
  • Max & Lucas playing their make-believe games for hours on end
  • Endless ambulances (Eva calls them bee-bahs, and is still a little scared of them)
  • The washer at the end of its cycle, which sounds as if it may be ushering in the end of the world
  • Raucous laughter from the cafe just below
  • Nouvelle Star (French version of American Idol)
  • Fans in nearly every room, doing their best to keep us cool
  • Musicians in the Metro tunnels, and on the trains themselves (I will miss the woman who plays the violin at the Concorde station on Sundays!)
  • The loud screech of opening the cupboard door, or the fridge door too far
  • Water cycling into the pipes outside our bedroom door (I don't understand this, as the radiators are definitely not on!)
  • Marc's key in the door
  • Eva singing endless renditions of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star"
  • Hundreds of children's voices laughing and playing at recess
  • No cell phone, and the regular phone not even ringing once a day
  • The tiny click indicating that we can open one of the two doors into our building

A great list of sounds. I love the sound of the ambulances there. I don't now why, especially when it is raining.
Our hotel we stayed at in Saint-Germain-des-Pres neighborhood had a school out the back. The only time I heard children in Paris.

Ditto to Kristi's comment. What a great idea to document the sounds. I love Eva's rendition of ambulance.

Your writing astounds me! Very visual. I can hear and see everything you wrote about. Don't stop.

I so enjoy hearing about your Paris adventures and keep telling myself that I am absolultely going there someday. Reading about your "sounds of Paris" reminds me of many of the same sounds I heard in Vienna. The Austrians must be using the same washing machines because I know exactly what you are talking about!

What an amazing experience! I love that your children have this as a part of their childhood.

Neat list idea for documenting your trip.
I just read over the comments to some of my older posts and wanted to tell you I found Luci's brown and white dress at Mini Boden (link on my sidebar). They have cute boys clothes too and I think the prices are okay. Definitely not bargains, but not outrageous and the dresses are oh so cute! Sorry I never answered you about my work either - I do some grant writing from home(for non-profits). I'm only 5 or 6 days late responding, sorry! I usually pride myself on being timely.

I had never been to a place with so many sounds until I'd been to Paris. The pigeons are definitely loud and the morning cooing is an interesting wake-up. The ambulances are frequent and interesting, nothing like ours. There's just a whole lot going on when you live in a huge city with so many people right below your home. Interesting.

Another great idea. I feel like I have a visual of your life there - which is probably WAY off. Enjoy your last full week there...crazy!

You'll love having this list when Paris days are over. Bathing in nostalgia is definitely one of my prime pasttimes. Thank you for visiting my blog and writing my favorite word ("damn") in a comment. I've been a Michelle admirer for a while now!
