mental pictures

Here are a few things I wish I had photos of:
  • an older French gentleman out for a stroll with his wife, wearing a plaid shirt and a floral scarf around his neck. So comfortable in his masculinity!
  • an old French woman leaning over to see her reflection in a store window and plucking the errant hairs from her chin! (She looked exactly like I imagine the witch to be from Hansel & Gretel.)
  • a young French man in the Metro, wearing camo pants and a black tank top; he had a long ponytail and several tattoos, and was dragging an old granny grocery cart behind him.
It's against the law to photograph people in France without their permission, so any photos you do take like that must be done on the sly. Missing these photo ops actually hurt my heart (I imagine it's how Jill felt when she was the man riding a bicycle with a baquette and a beret!). I guess I will just have to hold on to the mental pictures instead...

How interesting that it's against the law. Your descriptions did provide great mental images, it makes me wonder what I have done in public when someone was watching.

I don't have much time to comment these days, but I am still reading your blog and I LOVE learning about Paris from you and your camera....I'm off to feed my baby.

Wow, I didn't know that. I think that law would make being a tourist or a photographer extremely difficult. I wonder how strictly that law is enforced. I guess French fashion magazines don't have those 'Dos and Donts' sections that show unsuspecting women in less than favorable attire. I'm always afraid I'm going to be one of those women, especially today when I'm wearing white pants that probably don't do anything flattering for my thighs. Oh well, c'est la vie :).

I'm so glad you wrote about these mental pictures. I remembered that you had told me about it being against the law to take people's pictures so I was pretty hyper about it and didn't take many street photos because of it. I took my blurry accordion picture on the sly and didn't get the man's face in it. I think I would have taken lots of cafe photos if I hadn't feared getting in trouble.

I'm glad you posted!

I didn't know that about france. That is certainly a bummer. It's really cool that you wrote it down because at least now you won't forget even if you don't have an actual photo of it. I find that I do the mental pictures a lot.

Jill seriously saw that! How utterly french and so stereotypical--you wouldn't think you'd actually see "the baguette man" in real life. I'm also sorry you didn't get those shots.

I enjoyed your descriptions- now I can embellish them even more. How odd that it is illegal for pictures- who would have thought!

THose are some fantastic mental shots. I just wish I could have seen the real thing. Who would have thunk that it would be against the law to photograph other people? Sounds like you are having a great time.

I love the old man's scarf! Woo-hoo! And the grocery cart. What a practical young man.

One of my first views of Paris was a tiny Citroen full of nuns in black veils, HURTLING around a bend so fast the car was almost on 2 wheels.

I also saw a woman walking a dog that was sooooo tiny, it was like a little rat on a string.

Another 'moment' I cherish was walking along a Parisian sidestreet in the pouring rain, with my friend, Clare. We met 2 suited businessmen walking towards us and as we passed, I clashed umbrellas with one of them. I said, 'Oh, sorry!' and he said, 'Oh, pardon!' and he was GORGEOUS!! *sigh* It would have been the perfect way to meet the Parisian man of your dreams...*goes off into Austen-esque daydream...*

Oh, to be able to slow down and really see the city. I feel like I walked around with my eyes closed. . .well, really i was just always looking up at all of the beauty. Never at what was in front of me!
