dental woes and coca lots

Yesterday morning I took all three kids in for their 6-month check to the dentist. All was well, Eva was even a good patient, until the dentist came out to talk about what he found.

Eva has two cavities (on her front teeth!). He is not sure if the decay is superficial enough for fillings to do the trick, or if she will need crowns! Crowns, at not even 2 years old?! And because she is so young, they have to put her out for the procedure. So not only do I have to pay the dental bill, but one for the anesthesiologist as well. They're booked up in their office, so we have to do it at the surgical center in order to get it taken care of before we go to Paris.

Lucas has gotten in 3 new molars since our last visit. All my kids' molars have particularly deep grooves, which is why we normally get sealants. Alas, no sealants on these yet since we didn't even know they had come in! And, they ALL 3 already have cavities! How is it possible to get 3 new teeth and already have cavities in them just since our last visit -- 6 months ago?! AND, he also has a filling that he apparently "ground out". I didn't even know that Lucas had a tooth-grinding problem. Because of his high pain tolerance, he never complained of it hurting, so now it has been ground down to the pulp -- necessitating a crown. Yep, if he had told me about it sooner, a new filling would have done the trick.

me: "Lucas! Why didn't you tell me your tooth was hurting?"

Lucas: "What tooth?"

sigh.

I'm just glad that Lucas has become a good patient -- he turns down the laughing gas! Quite a turnaround, since we once had to put him out to do fillings.

In more pleasant news, Eva has discovered the beauty of polka dots. She calls them coca lots, which thoroughly tickles me. She points them out everywhere. A girl after my own heart.

I can't believe Lucas didn't say anything! Tooth pain drives me up the wall. I had to get a tooth filled over Christmas break and I hated it. I've had three cavities before that and I've vowed never to have another one again! Hope all goes well with the crowns!

That's too funny about Eva and "coca lots"--she's so cute!

You are so good to take your kids in every six months. It has been a year for us and now I feel I should wait no longer.

I don't know if the dentist said anything, but some people just have bad (soft) teeth, I'm one of them, where cavities are easy to get. Too bad about Eva. I hope it's just an easy fix and not crowns.

I love that she calls polka dots, coca lots. Darling. I can see why you love it so seeing how they are such a favorite.

What awful news Michelle. My sympathies.

I'm agreeing with you, how in the world could that many cavities make it to 3 new teeth. Must be like Amy said, soft enamel. Sorry about Eva's little teeth too, not fun!

I LOVE coca lots!! I bet you will be sad when she knows and says the real word. I hated when my kids 'grew' up with their words!

Oh dear, that is sad and expensive news. I do think that sometimes people just have softer enamel that is easier to decay.

I love love love the "coca lots". So cute!

Oh man, that's horrific. I have serious dental fear. And acute paranoia about dental problems in my mouth...I think Jessie and I have even discussed this at one point...

It just seems so wrong for a 2 year old to get crowns - I mean seriously, she'll be losing those teeth in what, 4-5 years anyways! It just seems so unjust!

I hope all goes well with the "proceduring." I'm definitely passing along my sympathies!

Oh, and too cute about the "coca lots" - for some reason, that reminds me of a name a cereal would have. Shows you where my priorities are. ;)

It seems unfair that you guys have dental woes on top of all the ear infections and fevers, what's up with that?

Coca lots is just about the cutest thing I've ever heard.

Michelle! I'm wondering in my naivite, if we couldn't just wait for two-year-old sweet Eva to lose those front teeth??? Am I crazy? So sorry for the dental woes!

Ahhh... What a pain! My 5 yr old is the same with pain. If he actually does complain I know it is really bad. I can't beleive so many dental whoes. We have been there unfortuntaly. So many cavities.

The coca lots could not be more precious. I love the little talk they do. I don't let my older kids teach the right words to my younger kids because I love they way they talk and if they can get the words right I know they are growing up. I have one who calls the washing machine the washing merry.

Michelle, MIchelle--I feel your woes. Sophie had similar problems when she was litte (and yes between her two front teeth). They put her out too. What a pain. Dental woes make me feel like such a crappy parent.

So, so, sorry.

Wow, I would almost be tempted to get a second opinion on the cavities for your son. 6 months seems awfully quick to get cavities in teeth that are newly erupted.
I worked as a dental assistant for a time and you would not believe how many dentists will tell you that you have cavities when you don't.

Coca lots has gotten to be one of the cutest things I have heard in awhile! :)

Oh I think I have a cavity too. I haven't made an appointment yet, to find out if it's one or possibly like 5 cavities. I am so sorry you had such a bad dentist day!

This makes me feel a little better that I'm not the only one! My kids have at least one cavity every time we go. I found you from my friend Cara who knows your friend Jennifer.
I love your blog and all your cute ideas.

We have dental woes as well. I won't go there...

Coco dots - so cute! It makes me smile thinking about it.

I just read that Eva is throwing up. I am so sorry (but selfishly slightly relieved it is not this horrible thing I have going on because now I am sure I was contagious on Friday before I was feeling any signs of sickness. I would feel terrible if I spread more sickness to your house!) I hope she is doing better now and that it doesn't spread!!!

I LOVE the coca lots! THe little things kids say just a little bit different is always so cute.

Sorry to hear about all of those cavities! Major bummer!

Coca Lots literally has made my day. That is just too cute.

Sorry about the dental woes- I can't imagine an (almost) 2 year old having to get crowns.

Yes! I second the second opinion. Dental woes are no fun and so expensive. My husband and I have lousy dental genes. I've told my kids they have to check dental records before getting married!

Oh, so sorry about the dental woes and now the throwing up. Ugh!
I LOVE coca lots. I hope it takes YEARS for her to outgrow that one.

I'm all for second opinions! That just seems horrible for everyone involved!
COCO LOTS! SO adorable!!!

I'm so sorry about the dental issues. I haven't even taken Evie to the dentist, so you are one step ahead of me!

Talk to Amy W about the process, she had to have Soph put under for dental stuff.
