why be picky?
As an addendum to my previous post, I thought I'd document how truly un-picky I am, just to provide a little contrast between me and my children. I could easily make a short list of the foods my kids like to eat, but for me, it's the opposite.
Here's what I don't like to eat:
candy corn
Circus Peanuts (or circus penises, as my little cousin calls them)
french toast
okra
lima beans
I honestly can't think of anything else. By the way, candy corn is a new addition -- I love finding things that I don't like to eat, it's so nice to have something I can pass on with absolutely no willpower!
Now granted, I haven't tasted everything there is to eat in this world, but I do love all kinds of ethnic foods, seafood, sushi, meats, and pretty much every vegetable. I love spicy food. Heck, I even like liver! I like the stinky cheeses in France! I ask you, is it fair that I should be burdened with these picky eaters? I think not.
So I'm curious, what do you not like?

I can't imagine having such a short list of dislikes. You know mine is monstrously long, here is a short list.
chicken
coconut
pineapple
all seafood
most ethnic foods
eggs
most vegetables
raisins
jello
any strangely textured foods
Apparently I'm a freak.
Ditto to everything on your list, but I do like french toast, as long as it isn't soggy.
My problem is that I have a list of food that I will not eat, that I think I don't like, but in fact, I have never tried it. It includes some of the following:
black liccorice
pickled beets/eggs (I am in PA Dutch country after all)
lamb with mint sauce or any lamb actually.
I know there are more, but I can't think of them right now.
I can't stomach:
meat that comes in a can
pre-ccoked pasta
strawberry/banana anything
jello in most forms
Dave is a much more adventerous eater than I am, which is funny because he grew up so "meat-and-potatoes".
Jill- what do you like to eat?
You definetely don't deserve picky eaters. I'm so sorry. I am a picky eater, I feel sorry for my mom who had to put up with me. I luckily have kids who will eat anything. But they're only 2 and 1 maybe they'll change.
I hate eggs. I won't allow them to be cooked in my house while I'm home, the smell alone makes me sick to my stomach.
other things
tomatos
sweet potatoes
turkey
peanut butter
sausage
onions
french toast
most cold cereals
pecans
and oh the list can go on. I've actually improved a lot since being on my own.
You don't really want the list of what I don't like; a shorter version would be what I do like. Probably the most freakish thing I dislike is strawberries--I know--yes strawberries. I've tried them multiple times and every time they make me gag. Go figure. I'm a huge fan of junk food and so maybe that's a contributing factor to my really weird pickiness. Jessie and I have discussed this sometimes and we can't figure out where this comes from in our family--I mean seriously, I'm weird. I really don't know what it is and I wish I liked more, but is there really anything to do about that, especially when you're older? And Jill: I think we are in the same boat my friend except I like chicken, some seafood, eggs, and jello, but it sounds like we might just be even on the freakish picky eater front--solidarity sister!
I also am not a fan of salad in any way, shape, or form.
Isn't amazing how picky kids can be. I don't think I was particularly picky as a child, but I know that as an adult I like alot of things that I didn't then.
Things I don't like:
canned veggies (especially green beans, sick!! my mom was always serving these! GAGGING right now!)
black licorice
pickled anything
mayo
hmmm, I'm having a hard time thinking of anything else, probably because I only buy what I like. :)
Good luck on the picky eater thing. It is so hard, but I think you are doing all the right things. Keep it up. Oh, have you ever tried to shred up veggies and put them in things they like...such as meatballs or meatloaf. Works pretty good, because they can't see it. It just might work for you!
Oh Michelle I am right there with you and the non-picky eating. I can only think of 5 things right now that I don't like even though I have tried to like them. It just isn't fair to be such a fan of food and have picky kids.
Beets
Okra in any form
Strawberry yogurt if it has chunks
Lamb
Most goat cheese- but I think this is more because I have not been exposed to the right stuff and don't want to waste money trying to find a good one.
Circus Peanuts are gross. Good for you.
I won't bore you with a long post since I know as well as my close friends and family how PICKY I can be.
seafood (of any kind)
calluflower
eggs
raisins
dill pickles
mustard
really any breakfast food except toast, bacon and cereal.
I could go on, but I guess I am a freak along with Jill :)
I just seriously sat here for five minutes and tried to think of foods that I dislike. I'm a longtime vegetarian, so I can't say meat- that's cheating. I like pretty much everything. Except MAYO. But that's a condiment.
It's so interesting to hear what people don't like. I like pretty much everything, and am willing to try pretty much anything.
I am not a huge fan of steak, amen on the circus peanuts and add peeps to that.
I really like to eat!! Very few things I don't like:
Lima beans
Liver!
brussels sprouts
circus peanuts are at the very bottom of my sweet list! (I am never that hard up for a sweet).
you con't like those circus peanuts. i thought everyone liked those! i am cursed with liking all those horrible foods like orange circus peanuts, pink snowballs and idaho spuds.
My list is too long but I don't really like herbs and spices, especially basil, oregano and cilantro. I think that cilantro is the most disgusting thing ever. To me it tastes the way b.o. smells.
I hope you will be my friend even though I like circus peanuts, stale Peeps , jelly beans (except black) and candy corn. Maybe I should go hang out with Kristi- she seemed to share my sweet tooth!
I am not really an adventurous eater, but I don't think of myself as picky. Especially after reading the lists here- how do some of these people stay alive?
I was/am a very picky eater, but it gets better with age. I still won't eat:
Cooked vegetables, I prefer them raw and with dip.
Seafood of any kind
Mushrooms
Chinese Food, I think it is the soy sauce flavor really.
Squash, although I love pumpkin pie and zucchini breads.
I find if you can hid things in food sometimes that works.
I am a real texture person and have a strong gag reflex, so anything mushy is out. For instance I like baked potatoes, but can't eat mashed. Go figure.
And I agree those circus peanuts are nasty, and peeps as well.
OK, the only thing that I can concur with from your list is Circus peanuts. I don't think I've ever had okra, so I don't know. But French Toast! What? French toast is my absolute favorite! Other than that I can't think of anything I don't like that I've tried. OK, strike that, so Japanese candies are really gross. However, there are a few things that I won't try: tripe, sushi (I know, I know), these little egg things that Philipinos eat that have the chickden fetus fully developed inside them. . .ok, I'm mkaing myself gag. Gross!
I will never be able to look at a circus peanut again - thanks for the laugh!
That's impressive that you only have a few things you don't eat.
I don't like shrimp or peanut butter. There are other things...oh ya and mushrooms or bell peppers....but these are the thinkgs that are the biggest hassle. I don't know how Jill functions. And no Reese's doesn't count as peanut butter....
interesting....I must not like something...have to think and get back to you!
