games galore
We have been playing lots of games lately. We seem to go in cycles of board games/card games. Since Lucas has been home with an ear infection, he and I have played 4 games of the Settlers of Catan, and the four of us played it for family home evening on Monday.
Yesterday Jill came by for awhile after Whitney's eye appointment and Lucas was thrilled to have an unexpected chance to play with Landon. I only got this blurry photo of the two of them playing Monopoly.
A few days ago, Max, Lucas and I played Life. It cracks me up to hear them debating about whether they should go to college or start right in on their careers (they almost always choose college). Ditto to getting married and adding babies to the mix. Plus, it's always cool to look at your life tiles at the end and discover that you cured the common cold! or wrote the great American novel! or won a Nobel prize!
So, I'm curious, what games do you like to play? Max wants expansion sets for Catan and Carcassonne for Christmas. Got any recommendations for those or other games?

Good pictures! I loved games when I was a kid- still do of course. I remember my brother really liking Risk- not sure how old you have to be to play that one. Our family still plays Pictionary almost everytime we get together as well as various card games. I remember that being a favorite on family nights.
I love games! I love all of the cranium brand games, they're great, especially Zigity. I also really enjoy Milles Bournes (I'm not sure if I spelled that correctly) and mexican train dominos.
Apples to Apples!
Milles Bournes! I forgot all about that one, Anne, and I think we have it buried in our game closet, too...
Hi Michelle! Your blog is a treat! All that grape juice looks wonderful, and a little slice of Tuscany in your own backyard? Yeah, that's most definitely a perfect day!
We play UNO. Lots and lots of UNO. Mix in a little Operation, and Clue, Jr. and that's about the extent of it. We really should branch out more, but these are what my boys love. They also have Star Wars Stratego and have made up their own rules that not only confuse me but ensure that I lose every single time I play it with them!
I have never even heard of those games you listed at the end. (maybe I am out of the game loop)
Uno is a favorite in our house as is speed, rummi kub, dominoes, and skipbo. I too love games. In fact, we just got a fun game (would you rather) and am dying to play it with a group of people.
Oh man, I love playing games. I could make a huge list - Cranium, Scattergories, Apples to Apples, Catan, Monopoly, UNO...seriously, this could be a while.
I also love really "nerdy" card style games - two we have in particular are called Munchkin and Killer Bunnies. Definitely not for everyone, but if you have an inner nerd that needs to be expressed, these are great ones ;)
Am I the only one that doesn't like to play games? I play them for my family, especially Kelly who LOVES games. I don't really know how to be a good sport about them and unless I really enjoy the company, feel like I am wasting my time.
What we do play is Ziggity, Sets, Monopoly Card Game (never the real version for me!!), Apples to Apples Jr., In A Pickle, Catan (with Micah and Angela) and Rummikub. I grew up on Racko and Speed/War. I often choose Trivial Pursuit with my own rules! (I get a piece of pie for every correct question and Kelly has to actually land on the pie square. He still wins but I don't feel oblitereated that way!) I think group games are more fun- I loved CatchPhrase (from our retreat), Taboo and Guesstures are favorites, and Scattegories (though 12 rounds is too long for my tired brain). If your boys like Catan, they might like the game I played in Seattle with my sister- I think it is called Dread Pirate. The board is a fabric map, the pieces are ships, the goal is to collect treasure by trading or raiding... maybe check it out!
(for a girl who really doesn't like games, this turned into a long comment, sorry!!)
Lots of good games have been named. We love the DVD trivia type games too but those probably aren't too fun for kids. A couple of games we like that haven't been metioned are Catch Phrase and Sequence.
Oh, I forgot to mention Nertz, anytime we get together with my sister's family we have to play that everynight.
WOw. Lots of games to choose from. We have always been a Yahtzee playing family. We also like card games - Hearts, Gin and "Mormon Bridge."
Cities and Knights is a great expansion for catan. It brings alot of different aspects into the game. It is pretty detailed but once you learn it it is fun. I have the Knight expansion for Carcassone. I don't like the river expansion. I feel like it gets in the way of building the castles.
I'm now dying to know what Zigity is.
I love Settlers of Catan, Speed, Speed Scrabble, Milles Bournes (though it's been years), Rummikub and Apples to Apples.
I love games, but sadly Jeremy doesn't, so we almost never play them. I can sometimes get him to play Mexican Train dominoes or very rarely Trivial Pursuit, but that's it. We have Settlers of Catan and a booster pack that I bought for Christmas last year, but I think they're still wrapped in shrinkwrap. Does that game work well with only two people?
I enjoy games that don't make me feel dumb - I don't mind being mentally stupid but I hate getting up infront of others and acting dumb! Jimmy doesn't like games so we don't play much unless it is just stuff with the kids.
