Mother's Day

I read in a magazine recently that most mothers receive flowers for Mother's Day. But when surveyed, most mothers reported that what they really wanted for Mother's Day was:

1. sleep
2. breakfast in bed
3. sleep
4. time alone
5. sleep

Those things would make me happy! Most years I feel kind of guilty that what I would most like to do on Mother's Day is take a nap or have a little alone time. Should I be wanting to spend quality time with my children?

This year I had a rare opportunity to spend Mother's Day with my mother and grandmother. My mom and dad were thinking of taking a spontaneous trip out to Utah, but Mom was bemoaning the fact that her mom and sister couldn't come over from Denver to join us. I mentioned in passing that maybe we could all meet in Denver, and suddenly the plans were in motion. It felt so strange to me: I never buy plane tickets. Ever. And I very rarely do anything spontaneous!

While I did miss Marc and my boys, I had a wonderful Mother's Day. (And, no, I didn't get a nap. Such is life with a baby...) I got to spend the day with my mother, my grandmother, my sister and my aunt (as well as cousins, babies, dad, grandpa, etc.). We went to church together, cooked a big dinner together, ate, laughed, and opened gifts together. It was different from any other Mother's Day I have had -- we spent the day celebrating the love and sisterhood that we share as mothers in the same family -- and I'm so glad I was able to make it.

Because I was leaving prior to Mother's Day, Marc gave me my gift early: my new camera!! I had been debating between the brand new model and the one from last year. I kind of wanted the one that just came out, but didn't know if it was wise to spend the extra money. Marc took it upon himself to track down on of the new models and surprised me with it on Friday night. It's my birthday, Mother's Day, and anniversary gift, but since it's all I really want, I'm more than okay with that!

I hope all of you who are mothers had a great day yesterday.

Congratulations on your new camera! What kind did you get?

It sounds like you had a fabulous Mother's Day! Isn't it sad that we don't get to spend the day with our Moms when we get older (unless they live close by)? It's also sad that we don't really want to spend the day being a Mom, but in a completely understandable kind of way. I think Mother's Day shouls be a day when we're allowed to disappear and enjoy time not fulfilling our motherly duties!

How fun to have a new camera! Can't wait to hear what you got.

I'm glad you are having a nice long weekend with your family, it sounds really fun! A girls weekend with my mom and sisters would be fun, we haven't done that since my grandma passed away. We used to meet in St. George and play for a few days at a time.

I think spending a few days with your grandma, grandpa, mom, dad, aunt, sister and cousins is a great way to celebrate Mother's Day. The list of the top 5 things women want made me feel better--I'm always wanting time alone.

Your MOther's Day sounds great. I too would enjoy some time alone even though I love spending one on one with my husband and without the kids. I think it is always fun to do something spontaneous. Glad you were able to go to Denver and it sounds like you had an enjoyable time.

What kind of camera??? Looks like we all would like to know. I agree with that Mother's Day list, but feel guilty to want that...such is life! I love that you got to spend all that time together with your family. Family girl time is the best.

It was indeed the very best Mother's Day. I don't know any more admirable Mothers that you, Jessie, Grandma and Denise. I am honored to be related! You are perhaps the best example of motherhood I know!
