In honor of this blog milestone, a story:
Last night as we were getting close to home around 7:00 p.m., we passed Del Taco. I noticed that the drive-through was packed. I commented that it seemed pretty sad to be driving through Del Taco on Christmas Eve.
Marc had a different take on it. He said that maybe the whole gang was together, hanging out, playing games, and someone went for a taco run. Maybe they just love tacos, and so that was their idea of a celebration. Huh.
Fast forward to today. After our Christmas traditions of opening our stockings, eating cinnamon and caramel-pecan rolls with hot punch and/or chocolate milk, and opening our gifts (and a brief nap break), I started working on Christmas dinner.
We had spiral-cut ham, twice-baked crab-stuffed potatoes, balsamic green beans with bacon and shallots, homemade rolls, and Concord grape juice that I bottled last fall.
Marc and I sat down to eat. Lucas refused to come out of his room because he claimed the smell of the bacon cooking was too gross and gave him a headache. Eva wasn't hungry and was too busy playing with her new Littlest Pet Shop guys to even come eat a roll. Max couldn't seem to make it to the table when we were ready to sit down.
So Marc and I sat there and looked at each other. I told him that next year, I may just send him on a taco run.
*I am approaching my 4-year blog anniversary.
How long have you been reading?*

I'm not surprised by Lucas or Eva's lack of dinner enthusiasm, but Max's slow response is baffling.
I like Marc's take (and am surprised by it) on the Christmas Eve Del Taco run. We noticed that the gas station mini mart was full too, apparently people weren't ready to be home for the night.
Congratulations on your 1000th post!
Now that is a funny story, Michelle. Your kids certainly have a mother with great culinary skills. I'm impressed you always use them on "just family". It inspires me.
I don't know for sure how long I've been reading your blog, but I think I started in your first year. All I know is I have appreciated our friendship. You have certainly enriched my life through your blog and I thank you for it.
what a great story! (we had our "Christmas Feast" at my parents house last night. we have to sit at tables throughout the house because there are so many people.
it somehow ended up that mat and i got a table to ourselves (candlelight and everything!) by and by, as people finished eating, they came by and commented that we were by ourselves. we realized that it was the quietest meal we'd had in ages with just the two of us!
oh, and i think i've been reading chez moi since fall of 2006!
That is funny! :) Sounds like a merry christmas overall :)
Thanks for writing your blog, I have been privately enjoying it for a couple of years now I think. :)
I just noticed your beautiful blog header! Did you take that photo? It's perfect for Christmas!
Brian and I went to I-Hop for our Christmas Eve dinner. While I would have preferred something nicer (the sushi restaurant we went to first had just closed for the night) I like not having to spend the time cooking or cleaning and being able to enjoy the time with my family.
I think I've been reading for more than three years! Time sure flies!
Predictions for the future:
Lucas will become a food critic and restauranteur with his own show on Food Network. Eva will run his restaurant for him which will specialize in exotic recipes from around the world. No recipe will be on the menu without her approval.
Lucas, on his cooking show, will often laugh at his lack of appreciation for his mother's fine cooking. His fans will adore the stories.
Max, too distracted by his computer software business and cello performances, will find himself at Del Taco on Christmas Eve, merely because he had lost track of time.
Congrats on your 1000th post! I love your photo header! I have been lurking from the beginning and commenting for the past few years!
Congratulations on your 1000th! I have been reading for over 2 years and rarely comment.
We spent Christmas eve with a woman from the ward who has no family nearby. It was a pleasure to have her in our home.
Christmas for us is a very casual meal as we would rather spend the time with each other than cooking!
I rarely comment, but I have been reading for about a year or so? Loved all your Paris posts & the cooking, love the cooking!
Love this story, a interesting read. And I have been reading from the begining!
I have been reading since summer 07- I love this blog, you & your darling family!
the story- kids!? that happens a lot here on regular weekdays... but that I can understand!
You are amazing- I feel so lucky to know you & share in your life through your blog- thanks so much for sharing!
Merry Christmas! I have been reading for 2 years now. I love your blog. I love your relationship with your faith, family and freinds. I have used many of your recipes and craft ideas. Thank you so much for sharing. Here's wishing you and your family the best New Year!
I'm happy to report that I have read and commented on every post you've written!
I have been reading for about 2 years. I love reading your blog because Eva and my daughter could be twins. Isabel is a year younger than Eva but they act the same. I like to hear how you handle things with Eva. I have used your approaches several times.
I have been reading your blog everyday for about six months, and this is my first comment. I found your blog when looking for blogs about Americans in Paris. Anyway, I admire your photography, your writing, and your insight into the daily challenges of life. And I hope I can say this without offending anyone, but It is hard to find a good blog to read that isn't written by a young twenty something first time mother who thinks she knows everything-know what I mean? Michelle, your blog is interesting, beautiful, and inspiring, and it is one of the first things I read every day. Thanks for all the good reads.
Colleen
1000th post....that is impressive! I'm not sure when I started reading but a couple of years.
oh, did you check your spam folder for your comments because for some reason mine started getting sent there last week?
Sometimes Christmas dinner can be sooooooo unrewarding! I'm impressed that you took it in such stride. I prefer Christmas Eve dinner to be the formal one and a relaxing day of leftovers works great!
Certainly, I must be one of your biggest fans (afterall, every mother crow thinks her babie's blackest!) and I am inspired and impressed and proud all at the same time with each reading. You have the gift in every way and have pushed me forward in many areas of life. Thanks for the effort and skill. You really are the blackest, you know.
mother
That account of trying to get the kids to come to Christmas dinner could be on a sitcom. I tried not to laugh, but couldn't quite help myself. Tacos don't sound too bad :)
And I've been reading since the beginning! Plus I can credit you and Jess for inspiring me to start my own blog!
I love Michelle's predictions, and I agree with Jill that I am surprised that Marc was defending the Del Taco crowd! See, everyone slums it at some point in their life ;).
wow....what a gift to receive such inspiring words from your mother on your 1000TH POST. ALWAYS a joy to hear and read about you and your family, especially the amazing love and respect you share with your parents. in awe!!!
