say it isn't so -- edited

I got an email from home late last night. It seems our furnace has gone out. Again.

A brief furnace history:

2002 -- Furnace died. We were in France at the time. Our renters had a new one installed. Big bucks.

2007 -- Furnace died. It was December 23rd, and a Sunday. Had the motherboard of the furnace replaced on December 26th. Big bucks.

2009 -- Furnace died. It appears we may need another new motherboard? What the?? Seriously. Aren't these things supposed to last 20 years? (or more?)

ARGHHHH!

**Edited to add: Marc and I also felt that something was fishy with the rate of repairs, so we asked our wonderful neighbor Heidi to check around and find someone who could give us a second opinion.

This new company sent someone out right away and he said the furnace is fine! When the girls first turned it on, smoke started filling the house, which was obviously very disconcerting and they turned it right off. Our old guy came to look at it and said it was gone and needed major repairs. The new guy turned it back on (on and off several times) and says that all is well! What the? All I can say is, I hope he's right. And we've found a new furnace guy. And God bless Heidi.**

That is crazy -- your last furnace problem seems like it was so recent. Is there no warranty on motherboards? I'm so sorry!

I'm so sorry! I don't see how it's possible that it has gone out so many times, especially considering it isn't used for like 5 months of the year! At least Heidi is on top of things right?!

wHAT IN THE WORLD?

this is craziness!
We had some people come out to "green sticker" our furnace & they told us we needed a new one...? We had a trusted friend who is in the business come over (he usually just does commercial stuff)... not so. Then when it was time to turn on the AC- it had been mysteriously unhooked somewhere inside the on/off switch (just a month later)
MORAL OF THE STORY: MAKE SURE THESE GUYS AREN'T JUST RIPPING YOU OFF. Some of these guys are seriously unethical. A plumber tried to charge us $1000 for a toilet fix last month- called another plummer-- $200.
-I'm paranoid of getting ripped off now-

I agree with Patsy - make sure you are using someone you can trust. (Sadly, being LDS is not necessarily a guarantee.) I just can't believe you have to go through this while away. I am so sorry!

Fridges and furnaces are not very friendly to you- so SORRY! And the timing- laughable! At least I can laugh since it didn't happen to me while I was out of the country or celebrating a holiday! Good Grief!

Isn't there some kind of "furnace lemon-law"?! Holy moly, I hate those kind of woes...so sad for your tennants as well! What are the odds that this could happen sooooo many times? Sheesh.

By the way, I love the new banner for my blog...I tried to email you, but whatever, my "updated email" server is so irritating...I love it!

Michelle I've loved looking through your last several entries and seeing the sites of Paris and London through your eyes. I am loving your view and your finds. What I would give to have a few days to get lost in those cities.

I am so sorry to hear this! I am with you. These things should be lasting way longer! Could it be something to do with the circut? Good luck with it all and have a blast with Jill!
