London -- Thursday

The kids were all excited to hit the Science Museum. Predictably, it was huge, and more than we could see in one visit. They had a great Wallace & Gromit exhibit, all about having big ideas and developing them, that kept us occupied for a long time.

I loved this miniature set of the garden.

My favorite photo that I took in London. A whole row of tags, what could be better?

Check out this clever chandelier made out of Bic pens and paper clips.

We had a late lunch at an Italian restaurant, where Lucas and Eva could get their daily pasta fix. Marc left us at that point to go to a photography exhibit and then to a show. (He was hugely disappointed by The Woman in Black. It was advertised as being scary, but he said there was more suspense in the game he played on his iPod during intermission...)

I took the kids on a nice, long walk to go see some touristy sites which Marc had absolutely no interest in, since he's been to London several times already.

We had to see Big Ben.

We had big plans to visit Westminster Abbey, but sadly it was already closed for the day, so we had to content ourselves with walking around the exterior.

We decided not to go on the London Eye, but it was fun to see it nonetheless.

This reminded me of Kristi. She takes pictures of interesting things on the ground.

**I too am so glad I know the answer to this question!**

We kept passing pubs with hordes of people spilling out onto the street. They didn't seem to be waiting to get in, they already had drinks in hand and were just standing around chatting. An interesting phenomenon that I haven't seen anywhere else.

Finally, we walked to Buckingham Palace. It is closed for the season, so no visits are allowed. No guards around at night, either. Still, Eva was suitably impressed to see a palace and to know that England has a queen.

For dinner, we made a repeat visit to an extremely family-friendly Italian restaurant that Marc had scoped out. The owner and the man I assume to be his father (or maybe it is vice-versa) remembered my kids and were quite taken with Eva. They brought her paper and a pen to draw while she waited for her buttered spaghetti, ditto Lucas. Max had salmon and I had lamb. Max could not have been more thrilled about eating out every day! We ordered desserts: Lucas -- a crêpe with ice cream and chocolate sauce, Eva -- chocolate cake, Max -- tiramisu, me -- profiteroles (small cream puffs filled with ice cream and smothered in chocolate sauce). Oh so good.

I love seeing your photos. What is it with these Europeans and their enormous museums? I think I loved the Rodin museum so much because you could actually view the whole thing in less than a day! What do you think Eva's billionaire idea will be? Non-Ziggity yogurt, perhaps?

That Wallace and Grommit garden set is so cool!

I love your hanging tag photo, and can imagine how delighted you were to get such a good shot!

Wow, you've captured a whisk chandelier and now this great pen chandelier.

Hooray for a blue sky behind Big Ben!

That "Does God Exist" poster is interesting; I'm glad I know which box to check!

I want to be an Olivier child!

That miniature garden reminds me of Peter Rabbit and Mr. McGregor.

I remembering the same thing about pubs when I was in London. My friend told me that people head to pubs straight after work. It has a more 'wholesome' angle on it than hanging out at bars or clubs.

I'm sorry you missed the Abbey. You would have loved seeing the graves of the poets and writers, the kings and queens, the coronation chair, etc. Next time.

I didn't go on the Eye either. That's not the way I want to die.

I cried when I saw Big Ben and Parliament...because I am awe-some.

"This reminded me of Kristi. She takes pictures of interesting things on the ground." That just sounded hilarious. 'Oh, this is my friend Kristi. She takes pictures of interesting things on the ground...'

I waited outside for 3 hours in the blazing hot sun to see the changing of the guards. It is not worth it at. all.

Sorry so many things are closed but even the exteriors are amazing to see- what a treasure box of photos for scrapbooking you will have!!!

I think you see things I would never see. I love it!

Also, I had a little grin this morning as I opened your blog and glanced at the sidebar that said you're a "homebody" and then read two posts about a quick trip to London. Ha! I am admiring your adventurous spirit...or at least the one you have adopted for your family this fall. You are marvelous!

I love all the architecture! I alwasy feel like older architechure has so much more intricate detail than our modern styles today. Lame modern architecture!
Thanks for sharing your great pictures!

The mini garden set is adorable. I'm a sucker for small sets like that!

Such a shame that Westminster Abbey. Oh, to see where Lady Di was married!

I love it when we take our kids to a resteraunt and the staff is so hospitable like that.

1. I am LOVING your photos of chandeliers made from random objects. I think we should collaborate & make one of our own when you return home. Mah wheels are spinning...

2. I have probably 7 photos so far from your sojourn abroad that I am pining to print in large format @ costco & frame. May I pay you a licensing fee....? :)

Actually, I'm serious.
