Yesterday was my first day of enjoying Fridays all to myself in Paris! I decided to name them Friday Flâneries.
Flânerie is strolling without a specific purpose, going forward without hurry. In other words, it's my favorite thing to do in Paris. Walking around, exploring, taking pictures, being able to stop for awhile or change course -- all as the mood strikes me.
I set out for the Marais to do some exploring. I had my iPod and my camera and I felt ready for anything.
First stop: PAUL, for one of their fabulous sesame camembert sandwiches. I ate at the outside tables and watched people go by.
After lunch, I just started walking.
I passed a little café with these cheerful chairs out front.
I passed a high school, where the kids were all leaving for (or coming back from) lunch.
A peek into a little courtyard. One of my favorite things is happening onto these courtyards, it's like a happy little surprise.
I wasn't hungry when I passed this pâtisserie, so I just took pictures. But later, when I looked at the pictures, I noticed the caramel eclairs! I would have bought one if I had noticed, I've never seen caramel ones before.
I love Parisian flower shops. They have such a way. And the rose petals on the ground really caught my fancy.
I went down a street that I had read about. I wanted to go to a store that was purported to have beautiful tea towels (something I love to collect), but it is no longer there. I did find a store with used silver pieces -- beautiful, expensive silver pieces. In the window they had bracelets fashioned out of old silver spoons and forks that had been flattened and curved. They were very reasonably priced and I was quite interested in them, but the owner told me that her inventory was very low and she was expecting more that were even better. I decided to go back another day.
Then I went to a wonderful store that Amy Hanks told me about: Entrée des Fournisseurs. I loved it! I spent over an hour looking at their beautiful ribbons, buttons, yarns, fabrics, and patterns.
I bought some wool felt, two small embroidery books with really cute patterns, an iron-on bird applique made of Liberty fabric, and a little bit of ribbon.
I sat for awhile in this park in the Place des Vosges, resting my legs and people-watching. I found it interesting that sitting on the grass is allowed in this park, pretty unusual for parks in Paris. There was a great cross-section of people.
Some of the songs I listened to. Riding the metro and walking around the city is entirely different while listening to music. A couple of times I was startled when someone spoke to me and I had to take my headphones out.
I found a large grocery store and went in to look for a few things I haven't seen in my local stores. There were many many things I wanted to buy: a ruffled scarf for me (they didn't have a color I liked, but I looooved the style), some clothes for Eva, notebooks...
I took this picture for you, Patsy. Also one of the butter aisle and one of the two yogurt aisles.
Again, I love the architecture here. See that sky? It was 75 degrees and fairly humid, and yet everyone was walking around in coats and scarves. I am not even kidding. I was wearing a short-sleeved blouse and I was sweating like crazy. France!
Suddenly, I realized that I had been meandering around for 5 hours and that I was exhausted. My legs and feet were tired, and I was just done.
I was so happy to see the metro. I went home and surprised Marc (he thought I would be gone longer). Then I fell asleep on my bed. So I even got a nap in the mix! What could be better? Maybe next time I'll schedule a movie for myself so I don't get worn out from walking.
Oh yes, I love Fridays in Paris.

Oh I love Fridays in Paris too because your post looks like this. I can't wait to see what else you find on your outings. I feel like I could comment on each photo. Especially the sandwich and dessert. Definitely the lunch I had on Friday, ha. Gorgeous post Michelle. Now you have a whole week to plan the next one. Exciting!
Hi Michelle! Marc told me about your blog and I hope you don't mind my taking a little peek at your time in France. I find I look forward to your next post! You do such a nice job and I love how your blog lets us "see" some of what you are seeing and doing. And your Friday flâneries look fun and perfect!
In Italian such a carefree walk is called a passeggiata. At night people of all ages just stroll towards the center of town without any real purpose in mind. I have always dreamed of taking una passeggiata through an Italian piazza after dusk, and now I know that during the day I could take flânerie in Paris! What a great past time. In this regard I have to admit that we Americans have fallen woefully short.
That sandwich looks so simple and delicious. I have a feeling I'm going to LOVE peeking in on your Fridays...such a treat!
I could NOT be more delighted with this post! I am so glad you get to have Fridays to wander the city by yourself free of any demands! What a luxury!
Your pictures are all gorgeous! Thank you for taking pictures of all these details. The flower shop people didn't yell at you to stop taking pictures eh?
It's funny to think of a French High School for some reason.
Your shopping bag of colorful felt is so pleasing, as is your iTouch with playlists (of course I love seeing my Fabulous Fall Mix listed).
I cannot imagine wearing a jacket in 75 degree weather ever!!! France!
I love, love, love your posts of France! I have a daughter who is a junior in high school going Paris in the spring. We drool over your pictures and think to ourselves, that will be you in a few short months! Thanks for giving us such a wonderful slice of life there!
I will be looking forward to your next Friday stroll! Such delight to read this today!
OH what a GREat post!
and that grocery store picture!!? I knew it would be that amazing... produce in baskets- gorgeous-
not to mention the pastries, sandwich, courtyard- wow!
I too am loving your Fridays in Paris :)
I want to spend one Friday with you in Paris. Just ONE!
PS: I used some birthday gift tags on gifts this week, and got more compliments on the gift tags than on the contents of the gift. So thanks for those!
Hi there this is Shelly slipping out of lurkerdom ~ I love this post, well, actually I love all your posts.
I'll probably never get to Paris but I feel like I'm there with you!
Thank you so much ~
Shelly ~ slipping back into lurkerdom!
Oh my goodness, I really think I must stop reading your delicious blog because I am overcome with envy with each new post. I saw the 1st picture and blurted, "camembert!" before even reading.
The photo of the produce made my eyes roll back in my head.
Camembert!
That looks like a magical day!! I love all your pictures. And just imagine all the magical Friday Flaneries in your future. ShamWow.
oh my, my, my 5 hours? Michelle....I think I would have run for a cool 10! Beautiful Beautiful photos. You are soo talented in capturing the essence of Pariiiiiii, I also love the courtyards, and most of the things you enjoy too! I remember going to Place des Vosges, because I soo much love that architecture with the color patterns....but listening to music, I don't think I am that avant-garde yet....I don't think I could give up the street chatter or might I think you are in a communion with your i pod....hehehehehhehehehe! viva la france!
I am SO LOVING your blogging from Paris. It's the closest I'm going to get to being there for a long time so I'm just going to pretend that I was there with you on that beautiful Friday. Thanks for the memories!
Sounds like a fabulous day. Seriously, I agree with Miranda. Maybe after looking at all your gorgeous photos it will be like I actually went to Paris myself... hmm, maybe not... but I enjoy your pictures anyway.
What a wonderful adventure and all to yourself...the pictures are wonderful and all that detail...thank you for sharing.
So so fabulous! I am giddy for you having a day a week to yourself.
Seriously... all of these great pictures! What are you going to do with them. I love blogging for documenting in the moment, how else would you have such a great record of your time there?
This collection of pictures is like a feast for the eyes! I feel like I've just spent a lovely afternoon in Paris! How lucky you are, Michelle, to be able to be there and experience this...
