flea market

Max and I took Michelle and her girls to the flea market, which, as my aunt Patti once said, "could be really great. Then again, it could be really horrible." (This is taken out of context, as she wasn't speaking about flea markets. But we have found in my family that it applies to a great many situations.)

You never know what you're going to see. Here is a selection of the good, the bad, and the ugly:

Michelle was searching for some botanical engravings. She found three that she really liked! Good.

Many of the vendors have a little lunch spread near their wares that they sample inbetween sales. Sometimes you see several men sitting together, enjoying a veritable al fresco feast. In this case, the woman had baguettes, cheese, spreads, pickles, and wine. Always wine. I especially loved seeing her dog, ever the hopeful onlooker. Good.

Seriously. Old dolls and clowns are so creepy! Ugly.

Really old books. Goooood.

A very large book with a pretty M monogram. In this case, the complete works of Molière. Good.

This vendor makes art pieces out of old typesetting pieces. He has the most varied collection of styles and sizes I have ever seen. We saw his stuff last time we were here and fell in love with it. Now I only love it more, as he has a whole new set of pieces that are black and red (most of them spelling out ART in red) -- they used to all be shades of brown. The bookends are new, and I'm officially pining after them. His smallest piece, about 6" square, is 70 euros, so I'm pretty much consigned to pining. Man, I love type. Goooood.

Yes, folks, you are seeing correctly. This is indeed a fork with a hoof handle. It gives me the shivers! Can you imagine carving with this at your next dinner party? Can you imagine washing it? Ewwwww. So very very bad. And ugly. And just plain wrong.

Oh, how I love the button man! He has a whole treasure trove waiting to be discovered. And he's extremely friendly to boot, and gives you a deal. Michelle and I kept finding more and more things we wanted. It's probably for the best that he was packing up his wares (but not before we bought a few). Good.

You might recall that my niece Kristen loves all things miniature. She loves to make them, she loves to collect them. She found the tiniest die in the world. She wanted to buy just the tiniest one -- it would be a perfect souvenir for her. But the man wouldn't sell it. Apparently, somewhere, back wherever he stores the rest of his junk, he has a tiny bottle that holds 3 tiny dice, and he didn't want to split up the set. He told us to come back next weekend. I told him that his buyer would be back in the States by then. He gave me his card and told me that if I called him, he would look for the bottle. If I came back, he would sell it to me. If after all that, he couldn't find the bottle, then he would sell me the die. Riiiight. This is so classic. And so bad. France!

My nieces pointed out this little den of horrors to me -- bad. So bad. And ugly.

This dog's owner saw me looking at him and asked if I wanted to take a photo. When I said yes, he told his dog to look for the picture and he did! Impressive and good.

Kristen ended up finding the tiniest spoons in the world (salt spoons) and loved them almost as much as the die. She bought two for her souvenirs and enjoyed them all the rest of the day. Good.

I bought some buttons (I can't resist), a little engraving of a girl, and some vintage velvet ribbon that was a real steal. I can't wait to find out what we will see next time...

I'm glad to see they made it there safely and their visit is underway!

This was a fun way to visit the flea market with you all. It's too bad the man wouldn't sell Kristen that tiniest of all dice, but I'm so glad she was able to find tiny spoons.

I'm totally creeped out by the clowns and ugly doll heads and the hangers!

Of course I love the type bookends!

And yes, it's 3:48am my time and I'm awake...good Hell!

I loved the tiny dice! I do NOT love creepy old clowns and dolls. Who would want those in their house?

How very chic- a French flea market. These will be things your kids can talk about for a lifetime. I'm so jealous!

Michelle, I am just loving your Paris posts. It is so fun to pop over and see what fun things you have pictures of and read your descriptions. I'm living vicariously.

I just had to comment about that hoof fork. I've been noticing quite a bit of handbags and shoes with this fur stuff. I can't stand the feel of that stuff. It completely creeps me out! Definitely a trend I hope passes quickly. I could not imagine seeing someone using that hoof fork at the table.

Old dolls ARE so creepy! My mom has this old vintage doll she had when she was a child in the 50's and my kids are TERRIFIED of it. I have a great photo of Isabelle when she was about 18 months screaming when we sat Suzy Playpal (creepy doll's name) next to her.

I simply MUST post about that! May I link to this post of yours? (stalker)

I can't see the detail in the button photo--ARE THOSE POM POM BUTTONS???? If so, they are delish.

What an adventurous outing! How much I would have loved to explore the Parisian flea market with you. And the bad/creepy things are always fun (and scary haha) to happen upon. And the hoof fork was truly, truly frightening. Really.

This was a very entertaining post. The good was so good, and the bad ... just wow! That hoof fork! Oh my goodness. I would love to know why somebody thought that was ever a good idea. I'm with you on the creepy dolls, and is that orange doll head attached to the hangers? I wonder who they thought would swoop that up?

I love how you saw the good, the bad and the ugly. Clint Eastwood would be so proud.

You're right. That hoof knife is disgusting. Ugh.

I love the little salt spoons. I'm glad she found a consolation prize.

I loved going to the flea market with you! I am so happy with my botanical prints - and he threw in the postcard Nicole wanted for free - hooray! I have had nightmares about the hoof fork, but for conversation sake I am glad Nicole found it. I will be longing for the print blocks as well, I am still thinking about them. hmmmm.

Today is the first time that I have had a chance to read your Paris blog, as I just returned from working withyour mom. It looks like you are having a marvelous time. That chocolate croissant looked divine - my mouth actually watered! Eva looked darling in the green dress and striped tights. I hope you are taking notes because I want to take Sophia there this summer and you saved our trip last time! So journey on and continue to share!

The typesetting art is the only thing I wish I had bought but didn't when we were there- I thought I could find it online for a better deal and haven't found anything as cool, especially now that there is black and red!! sigh.

I think the hoof knife will give me nightmares. What was someone thinking?!!

I am SO behind! I can't even take time to read other's comments...look at the hour!

I love the flea market! I love buttons, and yes, the hoof meat fork is REALLY creepy, or as Denise says, "It creeps me out"!

I am going to remember that Kristen likes miniatures, for I am certain that in my many collections, I have some cool ones! But I have to say that I kind of relate to the man with the die...there are just some things in my store that I don't want to sell! I make promises occasionally...

Looks like you;re having fun and hope you are relaxing a bit too!

Don't buy all the buttons before I come!

The Flea Market sounds right up our alley. Maybe the best bribe to get Jimmy to want to go there.

The hoof and the dolls are disturbing (the dog is a little for me too).

That carving fork is seriously disturbing-

For some reason in my mind French junk seems better than American junk- but it's all junk, really.

I've been trying to talk myself into dejunking my house since spring- it's not working.

I love the buttons- love them!

I love going to flea markets like crazy and I can't even imagine how spectacular it would be to go to one in Paris!

I enjoyed this account of the good, bad and the ugly...

Good...typesetting pieces, book, dice, buttons and cheerful little dog

Bad...hangers, and clowns

Very Very Bad...hoofed handle!
Talk about losing my appetite!
