trip to Oregon -- the drive

We were supposed to leave for our trip to Oregon with Marc's family on the 14th, but since Marc returned home from Paris on the night of the 12th and Jessie & Bella left on the afternoon of the 13th, it just wasn't going to happen. The rest of the family left on Monday, and we pulled out on Wednesday, armed with a prescription anti-nausea medicine for my oh-so-motion sick boys.

Most of the drive was pleasant. Nice weather, not too much traffic.

We stopped in Twin Falls, ID to refuel the car and ourselves. We just happened to pass by the Snake River Canyon, so we got out to have a look. Pretty impressive.

I quite enjoyed all the farmland scenery we passed -- so different from home.

I wanted to take a picture when the odometer on my van rolled over to 100,000 miles, but I was dozing at the time, so this was as close as I could get!

We took the drive in two days, so as not to become overly burned out on the whole road trip thing. We spent the night in Ontario, OR -- both Max & Lucas said they wished we had just driven all night, but after 6 or 7 hours, Eva starts in with incessant chants of "I can't get there! It's too hard to wait. I CAN'T do hard things!" ad nauseum. So, good call.

We stayed in a Sleep Inn, which I certainly can't recommend. (It resembled a Motel 6, but was substantially more expensive.) I took the kids swimming to work off some energy after sitting in the car all day. The pool was not heated! Brrrrrr.... We turned off all the lights and watched the first episode of the new season of Project Runway. All of us! So we were all up until 11:00. Good times.

Yowza! We saw a whole gamut of gas prices, ranging from $4.09 to $4.45 for regular. Ouch.

Road trip + road work = not cool. Big delays.

Max was the only one who really got any sleep during this drive -- probably due to his posh setup in the back seat.

This was how Lucas looked every time I looked behind me.

The kids watched many movies.

I had some very entertaining reading.

No sickness, no major glitches, and on the afternoon of Day 2, we finally pulled into Black Butte Ranch to join the others!

any time you can use the phrase "ad nauseum" referring to your children is a good time to pull over for the night!! can't wait to hear more about your trip.

Ah, the Idaho farmland! I, too, love to see that sight--it means that our drive to Jeremy's parents is nearly over! And I do sincerely love the Snake River Canyon!

Max does have a nice setup back there on the bench seat. How wonderful is it to travel in a minivan! I loved it when I was growing up.

I'm glad your trip was uneventful, with only a little muttering from Eva!

I'm so glad you're home and can't wait to read your posts.

Twin Falls. I was born and lived there for many years. Did you walk out over the Perrine Bridge to get your shot and feel the bridge tremble when the trucks went over it? It still scares me to think of taking the kids out to the middle of it.

I love the road construction picture. That's a good idea to photograph the annoyances in life.

oh wow...Michelle it is soo good to see a road trip like this with pictures and all...I am usually the type that will go go go, until we get there, but I can see some of the benefits of cutting it in half. Wished back in my old days...we had tv/dvd viewing in the car...that would have been something!

Eva makes me laugh. "I can't do hard things" either.

I loved the visuals of your trip. I know I am not willing to pay for quality hotels but it is still always such a disappoint to have a crappy room!

wow- even though road trips can be taxing-- I am really wishing we would've gone on one this summer....

I started reading that book & couldn't finish it.

I love that blogging is such a great way to document real life.
You are going to be so happy to have this in years to come :)

"I can't do hard things" just got added to our vocabulary around here! Gotta love the little ones. I feel like I am traveling with you and I can't wait to see what is instore for us now that "we" got there :)

I enjoy the sights on roadtrips too but would rather fly any day, especially with the kids. 8 hours of driving is about my limit with them. Luci gets carsick too. Our pediatrician told us to try Benadryl but it doesn't always work.

Having Eva along sure makes for an entertaining trip!

It's too bad that Lucas and Eva can't sleep well in the car. It seems like surrendering to sleep would make the time go so much faster, plus it's sleep which is good right?
