When I came out of the Paper Source store, I tried to take a self-portrait in front of the store window. None of them turned out very well, but I did manage to attract the attention of a very interesting woman. She came up to me and asked what I was taking pictures of, and when I told her I was trying to get a self-portrait in front of my favorite store, she was intrigued.
First of all, she wanted to know how I did it. I showed her how my camera has a flip-screen so you can compose what you're shooting. She was fascinated. Then she wanted to know why it was my favorite store. {And thus began my adventure with Violetta -- we walked and talked together for some time.}
Michelle: Well, everything in Paper Source is beautiful. You just want to buy it all!
Violetta: Yes, I know. I went in there once and made some paper flowers. It was all very lovely. I can see that you have an eye for beauty. When I was young, I used to design textiles and clothing in the garment district in New York.
M: How interesting! I've always thought that papers are like textiles. I love them both.
V: Walk with me!
V: Oh, my. I don't like all of that modern stuff. Too stark for my tastes.
M: It's not my favorite, but my husband loves it.
V: Well how do you reconcile that? I can see you probably like chandeliers and ornate things and traditional furnishings.
M: Very astute, I do like those things. But we did manage to find a light fixture that appeals to both our sensibilities. (I described this:)
V: That does sound like a remarkable melding of your styles. Where are you from?
M: Well, I live in Utah now.
V: Utah! Do you live by any of those Mormons? What do you think of them?
M: Oh yes, lots of them! I quite like them, actually.
V: Really? I don't know -- I don't think their women are very liberated. They all have about twelve children. And aren't they all Republicans? I like the French president. So he's divorced, so he has a mistress, I don't really care what he does in his bedroom, as long as he doesn't make war!
M: Hmm. Well, it's true most Mormons are probably Republicans, although the church doesn't endorse any political party or candidate.
V: But you're not one of them.
M: Actually I am.
V: No! But I love you! You weren't raised a Mormon, though?
M: Well, thanks. Yes, I was.
V: Hmm, I can see I spoke too hastily about the Mormons. They do seem to be good businessmen, I'll give them that. And they seem to have integrity. They're too honest to rob you or anything... Hey, come with me to Goodwill! I have furnished my whole house from Goodwill!
M: Wow. (seeing Goodwill was right across the street and thinking about the amazing things that Kristi finds) Okay!
We wandered around Goodwill together. Violetta stayed in the knick-knacks section, trying to decide if any of the little containers look sufficiently like antiques. I found 3 children's books (Eloïse, The Quiltmaker's Gift, and a very cool Shark pop-up book) for $2.00 each and a new cute teacup.
M: Well, Violetta, it was very nice to meet you.
V: Wait! I haven't shown you the calla lilies yet! They grow wild here, and I pick them all the time.
M: (wary) Are they nearby?
V: They're right here in my purse!
I duly admired her calla lilies of suspect origin, and then I took my leave of Violetta. But not before I got her to take a self-portrait with me! (Victory is mine!)

Anyone with glasses like those has got to be liberated. This was delightful, Michelle.
Oh Michelle, this was plumb delightful...and that SPT of you and Violetta is a gold mine. I don't know that Kristi has ever found a deal like Violetta at Good Will.
I loved this, Michelle! I was so happy to see a self-portrait at the end. What a character!
Can I just ditto Jane's comment?!!
(My mom sent us The Quiltmaker's Gift and my children love it! It came with fabric that matched the book- very cool but not enough for me to know what to do with it. Maybe you can figure something out when I get it unpacked.)
I am laughing out loud right now. What a wonderful story!
This is so fantastic! Even though you'd told me this story already reading about it and seeing the self-portrait of you two is hilarious and great. You deserve some sort of self-portrait award for getting that picture of the two of you!
I want those glasses!!!!
What a delightful woman! She seems crazy in all the best ways.
love this story-
so cool you got a portrait of the two of you!
San Fran is such a great place.
I was so happy to see the SP at the end. Wow- that whole experience is just awesome. You seriously need an award for that one.
What a wonderful and entertaining account at the end of the night! Grandma and I had a good laughas I tried to do justice to Violetta in a description!!!
Great adventure!
Ken came to see what I was reading. When I make an audible reaction he's always curious. I was laughing out loud, the story already had me chuckling, but the photo! And I didn't scroll that far until I was done with the text, just by good fortune, so I felt the full impact.
Ken says her real name may not be Violetta, she may in fact be Helen Gurley Brown.
she's a scream
This is absolutely hysterical!
I love Violetta!!! How can you NOT love a woman with ginormous glasses!
I also love that you enjoyed the magic of getting to know a complete stranger and going on a little adventure with her.
What a fabulous trip it looks like you had.
What a wonderful story! You could definitely tell she was a character by her looks! I'm so glad that you got a self portrait with her. What a great story to add to your life!
What a funny encounter and what a funny lady! I'm so glad you got a SP!
Oh she was so close to what I was picturing. Without those glasses, they are out of this world imaginable. The self portrait is the cap on this story. I love it!
Those glasses are the most amazing thing I've seen all week. What a fun encounter. How cool that you were open to just rolling with it.
oh my goodness...the glasses...they so fit the imagine I had in my head while reading!
Violetta is a HOOT! So glad you took an SP with her. What an interesting stroll you two had.
Wow! That was quite and adventure with Violetta. Very interesting name she has. I love the SPT with her...those are some glasses!!!
That was the best story! What a great memory/experience from your trip...
that was fantastic! i'm glad you got her to take self-portait, but was surprised to find it was exactly the way i was picturing her while reading about her.
Yikes, those are glasses! How cool must she have looked in her youth, in New York?
I love that she 'accosted' you mid-SPT and asked what you were doing. Haha.
I also love that Mormon conversation. You didn't expect to be the ambassador of your faith that day, I bet?
what a character....I did not imagine her like that though...I thought she was oriental....oh well
She looks EXACTLY as I had pictured her in my imagination while reading! What a fantastic encounter.
i love violetta!! what a great snippet of your weekend. and i'm so excited that you got a self-portrait with her!
OH MY! What a character! I love that you had this entire conversation with her and that you thought to take a sp of the two of you! I about laughed out loud when I saw the photo of her! She looks like a delight and totally fun! Gotta love anyone who can wear those glasses!
Sounds like you had a wonderful trip!
Oh. My. Gosh. My breath was taken away by your SP. What an experience for you. Loved it. Thank you for sharing your wonderful exchange with Violetta!
I love that you met this woman and shared her with us. I concur with what everyone else is saying...a delightful story indeed. Shocked you got that self portrait, but please nevertheless.
You are too funny! I love the way that you captured the conversation and Violetta's zaniness. I thought that I was going to fall off the couch because I was laughing SO hard after reading this. Thanks for sharing!
I need those glasses in my costume accessories for sure!
