SF -- day 2

On Thursday, Marc and I went to breakfast together (it was kind of lame), then we parted ways as he went back to the conference. My feet were killing me -- damn plantar fasciitis! -- and I feared I wouldn't be able to do the exploring I wanted to do. I was really bummed that I was having so much pain, especially since I have narrowed my footwear options down to a very few pair of "approved" shoes!

Anyway, I took my hot chocolate and caught a bus to go to Fillmore Street so I could finally see this store in person:

Paper Source! I've ordered from them online before, but this store was pure eye candy. I was there a long time, narrowing my choices, which was pretty difficult as I pretty much wanted everything I saw.

{Side note: I called Jill to get the exact address. Luckily, she had just gotten to my house to watch Eva and was able to look it up online and let me know that I was only a couple of blocks away. Thanks, Jill!}

When I came out of Paper Source, I met a very eccentric woman and hilarity ensued. But that will have to be a separate post...

I got another bus and went to the marina (I had found a walk online that purported to be the prettiest walk in SF). My map showed that the bus would take me all the way there, but when the driver told me we were at the last stop, I discovered I had to walk 5 more blocks to get there. By the time I walked the final distance, my feet were hurting to much to do the prettiest walk! So I sat on a bench, enjoyed the breeze, and took some photos.

I didn't tour Alcatraz, just viewed it from across the water.

I just love water. I am completely at peace when I'm by the ocean. I love the waves, the sound, everything.

I had wanted to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge, but my foot problems precluded that, so I had to content myself with viewing it from my bench. It sure was pretty!

After a little rest, I trekked back to the bus stop. If I had seen a cab, I would have taken it. As it was, I took my two buses back and was amazed that it was almost 5:00 by the time I made it back to the hotel! Marc was raring to go, so after stretching out on the bed for a few minutes and a change of clothes, we went out for a cable car ride.

We watched some street dancers for awhile -- so entertaining!

We rode the Powell Street cable car all the way to Fisherman's Wharf and got some great views.

We walked to Ghirardelli Square and found this cutest little cupcake shop. There was an employee packing up all the remaining cupcakes in preparation to close, and we dashed in and bought two. They all looked so good, but we chose fleur de sel: chocolate cupcakes with caramel filling, topped with chocolate ganache and a sprinkling of fleur de sel. Whoa. And that was before dinner!

We bought some chocolates for Marc's parents to thank them for staying with the kids, then we walked along the wharf. By this point, my feet were just killing, so we had clam chowder in sourdough bowls and caught a cab back to the hotel, where I had a long hot soak in the tub. Ahhhhhh.

I love taking your tour with you. What a fun way to discover SF for the first time--by yourself.

That Fillmore Paper Source was my first time, too. I had Kaitlin with me, but she kindly slept the entire time I was in there.

I am so bummed that you had to deal with foot problems. Now I want you to be able to go back! But at least you got some beautiful pictures. The photo of the Golden Gate Bridge is amazing! The Marina is one of my favorite places in SF--it's a quiet (relatively speaking) place to go and walk around. And the houses are really beautiful. When the 1989 earthquake happened the Marina District was almost completely demolished. Houses were damaged so terribly. They did a great job cleaning up and rebuilding.

And I had no idea there was a cupcake shop at Ghiradelli Square. I wish I has a whole day to myself rather than just half a day when I go in a few weeks. I want to have the luxury of wandering like you did!

Paper Source it is definitely eye candy. I haven't been able to go yet when I could really splurge but wandering, touching, and deciding on a few things is still fabulous.

I am loving your tour... I'm sorry your feet hurt. It sounds like you still made the most of it though and didn't give up.

What an excellent day! I'm sorry your feet gave you so much grief, but kudos to you for pushing through the pain and seeing so much of the city!

I thought it was cool that you could call for the address and I could look it up online and get such a specific map. It seemed very 21st century to me. I want to see what you bought at Paper Source. Didn't it feel a little bit like the Mother Ship calling you home?

I love places where, when you are forced to sit, the experience is still rich.
Beautiful photos.
When is the book club field trip to Paper Source? Eye candy indeed!

Wow! I have not been into a Paper Source, but that store looked absolutely gorgeous! I am not at all surprised that you spent so long in there and had a hard time choosing what to buy!

I miss CA!! Your beautiful photos make me want to go move back! Isn't SF just an amazing place?!

Oh, your poor feet. Not fair to have them act up on a trip!

I've dreamed of going to Paper Source. Their catalog is like a bit of heaven in the mail.

I love the graphic on that cupcake shop!

Quel domage about your feet...they will get better I promise, although i do not know if they will ever heal completely...but mine has not come back in many years...although it seemed like forever when I had it. The photos and walks and rides sound glourious...I think you are like me in adventure...just going hoping walking somewhere pretty!

Those Tiffany-blue lunchboxes @ papersource are too tempting for words.

How fun for you to take a trip alone with your husband, and what a great city to visit!

I remember my first visit to Paper Source in Boston. I had ordered online before, but never been inside one. They are to die for.

Whenever we go to the Temple {Boston}, we eat at our favorite Mexican resteraunt and then pop in at Paper Source just down the street. It makes for a perfect night!
