SF -- day 1

It felt so strange to get up and go to the airport -- just Marc and me, especially since we had to leave at 6:00 a.m. and the kids were all still asleep!

I read some on the flight (Wild Swans) and then dozed -- I don't enjoy waking up at 5:00, so I was glad to get a little more sleep. Flying without children is definitely a different experience. We took a shuttle to the hotel (Marriott), and it was in a great location, right downtown by Union Square.

Marc and I had a fabulous lunch at Annabelle's Bistro -- right across the street from our hotel. Marc looked through his conference program, trying to decide what sessions to attend (it was good fodder for laughs). How I wish I had taken a picture of the salad we had! It was so delicious and I want to re-create it: a little lettuce on the bottom, with different colors of sliced beets, marinated onions, blood orange slices, candied pecan halves, and blue cheese. YUM. After lunch, it was:

We wandered around Union Square doing a little window shopping until Marc had to head back for the conference. Then I went to Britex (a four-story fabric store)! It did not disappoint.

one floor is just for ribbons and buttons!
I browsed for a long time, and finally selected some patterned cottons that I want to use to make a birthday banner a la Pottery Barn.

Then I sat down in Union Square, under this tree, and wrote in my circle journal to Jessie.

I passed a flower market on my way back to the hotel.

I had a headache and I was tired, but I didn't even mind because I could take a nap! The beds were ultra-comfortable and I really appreciated the nice cotton bedding and chenille throw. I could have stayed there much longer, but eventually I got up and went to get Vietnamese noodle soup with Marc for dinner. Day 1: success!

A whole floor for buttons and ribbon- oh my! Those pictures are fantastic. Love that you documented the spot you sat and wrote to Jess- smart! And about the only time I love feeling tired and headache-y is when I know that a nap is in store. Nice day one!

Oooh! I can't wait to hear about the rest...I'm on the edge of my seat (and I know that sounds dramatic, but I love to hear what people think of "the city", as we call it).

Sounds like a great way to start a vacation to me. How nice that you 2 could get away. I almost always end up taking the kids along with me for business which I love doing - but it's nowhere near relaxing!

What a luxury for you to get to fly by yourself, and a short flight to boot!

The thought of you wandering that huge fabric store alone makes me happy for you. Places like that are even better when you're alone because you can totally focus on the things that appeal to you and you don't have to fret about the other person wanting to leave.

That bed looks so luxurious!

Sounds great!! The boxes of buttons look just like a fabulous source I used to haunt in NYC for the bowzone!

Your descriptive talents have it pictured perfectly in my mind,it seems like a perfect little get away to be sure.

oh that fabric store is dreamy! i noticed you were reading wild swans - is it three generations of chinese daughters? if so, this is one of my all time favorite reads - i could just feel myself getting smarter as i read it and i so appreciated learning about so much chinese culture. it was not an easy book to get through, i think i read it on and off one whole summer (not like me at all) but it was well worth it in the end. i'm excited to read the next installment of SF! i'm so glad you had a chance to get away for a few days - lucky you!

Your day 1 sounds so wonderful! Ben and I are leaving on a trip for 6 days in about a month, and I am sure it will be so nice to be free of being the mother for awhile!

That fabric store looks like heaven!!
