Today was crazy hair day at Lucas's school. I figured he would just forego getting his hair combed, as his hair is always crazy in the morning. But he had other ideas -- this wig, which was part of Max's monk costume from last Halloween. Yep, it's crazy alright. Incidentally, it freaked Eva out. She kept trying to get him to take it off.
So far this week I have logged between 9-10 hours in my studio organization project. Words cannot express how monumental this task had become. This is a picture of the fabric portion of the project, midway through. I'm happy to report that I gave away probably 40-50% of my fabric and sorted all that I'm keeping; it is now all in labeled plastic bins. I found scraps of many quilts I have made that I completely forgot about, found fabric that I bought for quilts that I haven't made yet, and generally was reminded of how much I enjoy fabric. It made me feel a little wistful.Housework, laundry, correspondence, blogging, and pretty much everything else has taken a back seat to the studio project this week. This is both good and bad. Mostly good, because I can see that I might actually get this completed at some point. Hard to believe, especially since it is looking even worse than before I began...
I went to Enrichment tonight. We had a service auction, an activity I have been proposing for Enrichment for about the last 4 years. It turned out really well. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they were serving dinner. (I made dinner tonight, but I ruined it. I can't remember the last time I did that. I made Thai chicken curry, and accidentally put WAY too much chile paste in. It was so spicy as to be practically inedible.)
We played bingo to earn points to bid with. I was impressed with some of the services that people offered: one provided a portrait session for as long as it would take to get a picture you would like of yourself and all images on a cd, one offered to teach you how to make a quilt (that is huge!), one offered to do the temple work for 5 of your family names, another was 2 hours of de-cluttering/organizing, one was help planning a party or wedding (!). I hadn't decided on what my offering would be until we got there. For some reason, I couldn't think of anything much that I could do. I was toying with making a cream pie or a box of handmade cards. I went with the cards.

To my surprise, the cards were a hotly bid item! Who knew? A woman that I visit teach ended up winning, and she requested wedding cards. I won homemade rolls (I got those mainly for Lucas) and an I.O.U. for homemade pumpkin muffins. As I was leaving, someone gave me the m&ms that accompanied the quilt offer.
The woman that was supposed to be the auctioneer got sick, so her husband took her place. He was hilarious. So were all the bidders. People were combining their points to get something they really wanted or to help someone else to win. One sister gave all her points to another who really wanted the photo session (I was so happy that she got it because she would probably never do that otherwise). Everyone was laughing the whole night and I felt like I know the sisters in my ward even better now. When it was over, my cute friend & neighbor came over to give me the restaurant gift certificates she had won and offered to watch my kids while we went out to eat. So sweet! I consider the activity a huge success.
Another happy note: Eva went down for her nap today and to bed tonight with NO crying for the first time in over a week. Blessed peace.
I also got a big surprise today: my friend Katrina from Seattle is coming to visit! We haven't seen each other for several years -- she has never met Eva and I have never met her first baby, who just turned 1. Her grandmother died at the age of 98, so she will be in Utah this weekend. She and the baby will stay with us and hopefully we will have a couple of days to catch up after the funeral. I am so excited!

I love Service Auctions! You get to know the sisters better and its so fun to see what people want!
The crazy hair day picture is hilarious!
I have not set foot in my studio since I got it partly unpacked. It is so frustrating to me on many levels and I think it contributes greatly to my bad mood!
Good luck! Here's to a full night of sleep for both of us!
What a great Enrichment! And what great offerings!
To answer your question: I started taking French when I was 11, I was an exchange student at 14 in Belgium, continued to study into college (and took a class or two from your husband in which I did not do well, incidentally...not for lack of understanding, but laziness) and then served a French speaking mission. I am now taking French for Business from LeBras and helping translate documents for an NGO. I'm sure you wanted to know all of that. Sometimes I can be so embarrassing to myself.
Anyway, this was a great post! And, while your studio maybe overwhelming, my studio is where I live. One room. That's it. I envy your mess.
i love the idea of a service auction, and that you bid with "points." sounds like a very fun evening.
sooo sorry to hear about the thai food. i can't stand when i botch a meal!
i want to do a service auction!! it sounds like so much fun! i want to know the sisters in my ward well too...
the picture of lucas freaked me out as i was not expecting it.
im assuming heidi was the kind benefactor of the dinner date/babysitting? i love heidi. (even if it wasnt her.)
i miss you.
What a great sounding event/night. It would be cool to know what others see as their strong points- having put them up for bid. I am sure there were some surprises.
Your studio project sounds daunting, but worth it! You have so much great stuff, it will be nice to know where it all is and feel relaxed in that room.
Hooray for Eva!!!
Wow 9-10 hours in your room this week, that's awesome! I totally understand the pain of it having to get worse before it gets better, but I always think it's so liberating to have the time to work on it and to see any progress at all.
That monk wig is right up there with spiders for me, I hate it! I gasped when I saw the picture of Lucas and feared he had decided to be a monk for Halloween this year. Ew!
Your service auction sounds so great, very unifying and fun. I've participated in one of those several years ago and thought it was a great idea. I'll have to suggest it at our next Enrichment Committee meeting.
Hooray for Eva sleeping!!!!!!!!!
Congrats on your studio organzing progress. Love all the fabric--how nice of you to pass it along. Fabric, like so many things, can trigger memories of past projects and future ones. For me, I see too many unfinished projects!
What a fun post to read, Michelle. Your service auction sounded so good...I think one of those would be fun after reading yours.
Thanks for the great idea for Enrichment. I am a newly called Enrichment Counselor in my ward and think that would be so unifying and fun! Thanks again!
That wig is something! eek! My girls love crazy hair day, but have never gone without hair for it.
Congratulations on your studio progress! It takes a lot of energy to tackle something like that.
Your Enrichment sounded so fun! That was always an idea that came up in my many Enrichment years, but never actually happened.
Have a nice weekend with Katrina!
Service auctions are the best! I need to suggest this for my ward here!
Way to go on the studio clean-up. Like you I have lots of unfinished quilt projects. Maybe one day I'll get them out again!
wow what a nice project and get together for sisters. I am excited for your homemade wedding cards...that should be fun. i love the wig...hehehhehehehe. And projects...yeah sadly they do get worst...is as if you opened a cute closed container, but then it is even cuter, because you know that the inside is pleasing for eyes and mind and heart. Congratulations...and have fun with your bon amie...that should be really cool, specially having her stay at your place.
Ok I can see why Eva wanted the hair to come off, it is a bit frightening.
Hooray for her going down so easily. It's amazing how something so small can make such a big difference on our day.
Your studio project sounds like a big tasks but a glorious task. I always enjoy the organization part once it's over.
