good Saturday escape

Yesterday was Amy's bookbinding class. I have been wanting to learn more about bookbinding for a long time, so I was really excited to go, and because Eva has been crying/screaming for hours before nap- and bedtime for several days now... the timing for a day away just could not have been better!

She had such a nice setup -- each of us had our own table, and Amy was so organized and prepared. She had pre-cut our inside papers and she even had handouts for us. She is so passionate about bookbinding, and that translates well to a teaching setting.

Tools are so pleasing to me (well, I should specify tools of the paper arts!). There's something so wonderful about having the right tools for the job, and Amy definitely does!

We were all a little jealous about this specialized tool, used for punching holes in the signatures. Like butter.

I never in my life thought I would have a reason to buy ammunition. If I decide to pursue bookbinding, I guess I might have to get some... (they're used as weights). But I have to say, I can't even imagine that shopping trip -- it's a bit of a deterrent to this hobby.

Amy has devised the perfect tool for measuring cover paper and mitering corners. So slick.

Jill's signatures all lined up and ready for punching -- what a pleasing sight.

Attaching the first signature to the cover was definitely the hardest part. After that, the sewing was pretty much smooth sailing. You kind of get a rhythm going and it was a good kind of tedium.

Amy came around many times to help us solve problems, untangle thread, etc. etc. This is where the small class size was really great.

Hannah brought these delicious homemade cookies. (Have I mentioned that homemade cookies are probably my favorite treat in the world?) She rattled off the recipe from memory. I have yet to write it down, but I plan to so I can reproduce these.

Amy in her element.

This totally made me want a panini maker. I love panini!

Jenn came by later in the afternoon. She brought us more treats, gave assistance, chatted with us, and even entertained Amy's kids for awhile!

Hannah cracked me up with her story of seeing the backside of a Snickers bar in her sister's cupboard and wondering what this strange candy bar was...

Our finished product! From L to R: Jill, Amy, Hannah, me, Diana. I can definitely see myself doing this again. Now I need to learn how to do a ribbon binding...

Amy, thanks for teaching us, feeding us, entertaining us!
(I really cannot emphasize enough how badly I needed this escape.)

Even though I was there it's fun to read your take on the day and to see your pictures. I'm glad you took one with the curved needles, I can't believe I didn't.

I'm also happy for you that you got a day out with no kids.

I love your pictures. It is cool to me that even though you and Jill were feet from each other, that you each got a lot of different shots. Excellent!

Your book turned out so great- and if I ever get really into this whole hobby, I will gladly share my buckshot with you and spare you that shopping trip. I can't imagine that being a deterrent!

I am totally on board if Amy ever teaches a ribbon binding. She is such a great teacher.

All the more reason for retirement. I think Dad has once again extended his retirement date!

The day sounds wonderful and rewarding in all ways!
Carry on!

What a wonderful day! I love the paper you used on your book. I would have a hard time purchasing ammunition, too. I'd have to send a proxy purchaser.

I'm with Carlo -- I want to fly out and take a class, too!

What a fun day! The skills you all possess amazes me. I am lucky I can get the book binding tape on a composition book even, must less go through all those steps.

Oh, and aren't homemade cookies EVERYONE's favorite?:)

Fabulous books! I love everything you did and even though it seems out of my skill range if I lived in Utah, I so would have been there. Trying at least.

What a perfect day out. Crying and whining at bedtime and naptime is so wearing. Yeah for any sort of recharge!

Sorry to hear Eva's been giving you more than your share of grief. Always taxing on the mind and body! You deserved a break, indeed! ANd what a cool way to spend it. The books look amazing and those cookies...tasty! That panini is not too shabby, either! What a fun day! :)

Very cool. I wanted to come. Your books turned out so cute and the company would make the day good anyway.

You can get the ammo stuff at Walmart... it seems a little less traumatic....

That sounds like so much fun! I'm amazed that there's actually some element of paper crafting at which you and Jill are inexperienced.
