testing, testing

Slowly but surely, I've been ticking off all of the things my new doctor wanted me to do before leaving for Paris. I was telling my visiting teachers about the problems I've been having with my knee when they came on Tuesday, and the one who is a psychiatrist actually said, "well, at least you might be able to get a knee replacement". Is that supposed to be a good thing? Was I to feel reassured by this news?! Because I wasn't. At all.

Wednesday was the day I went in to have my CT-scan and MRI. I took a picture of myself in my cute hospital gown (not) but smugmug refuses to rotate it. Oh well.

CT-scan: piece of cake. On to the MRI.

On the paperwork I had to fill out prior to the tests, I was asked if I was claustrophobic. I confidently checked the no box. That was before I laid down and was moved inside the machine. All I can say is, I am so grateful that I got to have my head poking out. If I had had to be completely inside, I am pretty sure I would have had a real problem. I've seen these things on TV, and maybe it's just because I'm big, but it was a lot less roomy in there than I had imagined.

They gave me some earplugs and warned me the machine was a little noisy. The tech said he would be talking to me throughout the test, or I could take a little nap. A nap sounded good. But he was really under-representing the noise -- it was like little clicks, followed by pounding sounds, followed by a very loud emergency broadcast system kind of noise. I don't know how anyone could sleep through all of that!

So now it's all over and I'm anxiously awaiting the news.

(Oh, get this: I was driving home when I realized I had forgotten my jewelry -- the jewelry I had posted about for SPT the day before -- in a locker. I had to go back, take Eva in, and find someone to help me get into the locked locker that someone else was occupying. Good grief. I wonder if all the noise affected my cognitive skills?)

Oh, seriously, having to go back anywhere with kids is such a pain!

I hope everything comes back normal on your CT scan and MRI. I was just reading back on your blog to find out what the heck was going on. Arthritis! Sounds terrible. I didn't even know you were experiencing so much pain! How are the new shoes working for you? Those Nike ones were dang cute!

I'm so delighted that you took all these pictures of your MRI experience. I'm sorry you had to go through that, and I know I would not be keen on cramming myself into one of those machines either. It's bizarre that you and Kristi both had MRIs on the same day! I hope all goes well and that your knee does NOT have to be replaced (good grief, what in the world was your visiting teacher trying to do to you...add a heart condition?).

Hope all goes well with your MRI. I've had a couple done - and they're not fun. All that before going to Paris? It's been great getting to know people through blogging - thanks for your posts.

Wait, is this Kristi's blog? LOL It's funny that both of you are having this experience lately. I haven't ever had an MRI but Jared did for his neck (after a rugby injury). I think I would be very claustrophobic. That's probably what caused me to have my near attack at the top of the Eiffel Tower. That or heights, not sure. Don't want to do it again.

I think the VT who mentioned the knee replacement was going a little extreme- there is so much you can do for your knee. Have you heard about chondroiton/glucosamine? I would look into some good supplements and other natural ways to strengthen the knee. Maybe some physical therapy? Don't start planning the surgery yet.

Great pictures. What a serious pain to have to go back especially since you had kids with you. THat is something I would have had to do.

WHat the heck with you VT? My husbands uncle has had knee replacements and that is not something you would casualy tell somone they might had to do. I have really bad knee also from playing bball in highschool. If there are any herbal remidies I would love to know. I can hear my grind every time I walk up stairs.

I hope all the results come back and it is something that physical therapy or something easier like that can help. The knee replacement comment- what in the world?!?!

Geez- like you don't have enough things to do to get your family of 5 to Paris for a VERY long stay, but you have to do all these crazy medical appointments as well.

Sorry to hear about all the craziness, but I'm glad you have been able to get everything scheduled. You visiting teacher is crazy. Knee replacement- yeah.. that is something to look forward to?

SO glad you remembered your jewelry-- that could have been truly devastating.

I am glad you are doing what you can before you leave and hope that the test results come back positive.

I am now terrified of an MRI experience. I can't imagine how horrible that would be if you were claustrophobic. I'm glad you survived it, but sorry you had to go all the way back inside. What a major pain.

I'm impressed that you would even consider posting a picture of you in your cute gown...I wouldn't dare! I hope that everything comes back normal. I appreciate the description you gave re: the MRI. I hope I never have to endure one, but I'm grateful to know what to expect if I do!!

I had an MRI in high school (I felt a slight pang of insult when you mentioned maybe it wasn't roomy because we are bigger now... not because you were talking about me just because I tend to forget my girth now when looking back to my normal sized years) I did take a nap in the machine and they had to wake me when it was over I remember him saying "no one ever REALLY takes a nap in there" - well then you shouldn't have told me to because sleeping is my talent.

I hope that you get your results soon and it is something fixable. Can't your feet problems be throwing your knee too? I had no idea you were having knee issues. I should be a better listener.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

i had called jill on my way there to calm myself down and she told me you had one as well, how funny is that.
seriously... crazy experience for me.
i keep having jeff check he computer to see if my results are up yet, it is starting to freak me out a little bit.

Michelle, I'm so glad you made it through the "scans" safely. Hopefully the results are not "knee-replacement worthy" despite the ridiculous, attempt-at-comfort comment from the V.T.
