Last week, I finally went to a podiatrist. I probably should have done that about 15 years ago, but I didn't. I lived in denial about the sorry state of my feet, because I feared getting the bad news that my kindly doctor delivered to me:
plantar fasciitis.
In case you don't know about this condition, let me enumerate its many frustrations.
1. pain
2. formation of bone spurs
3. hammer toes (ew!)
4. fallen arches, making my feet even wider than they were originally (and sadly, he thinks my feet could become even worse in this department)
5. possible need for surgery down the road
And here is what I have to do about it:
1. no going barefoot
2. no flip-flops or sandals
3. no prolonged standing
4. wear orthotics
5. take a prescription anti-inflammatory
6. do foot stretches and hot/cold soaks
7. possible need for cortisone shots
#1, #2, and #4 were devastating news for me. I love going barefoot! I live in flip-flops and sandals during the warmer months! And orthotics? I thought finding shoes to fit me was hard before -- sheesh! Oh, and the podiatrist recommended I just wear my exercise shoes around. All the time! Right....
I confess I went into a little period of mourning. Fortunately, my mom understood my plight. She explained that even when you don't look the way you want to look and your clothes don't fit the way you'd like them to, at least you've always got cute shoes to make you feel somewhat cute. Not that option was snatched away from me too!
I decided to sort through all of my shoes. That was a painful night. I ended up with 3 bags of shoes to get rid of, and some of them were pretty hard to say goodbye to. It was a lucky day for my neighbors' five daughters, though.
Jill and I looked at shoes on my birthday, and it was a fruitless search. I only found one pair that might work (and that I didn't find hideously ugly), and even then, they were going to have to punch more holes in the strap just to get it across my foot! Not ideal. (And, to add insult to injury, I was going to have to pay $120 for the privilege of wearing these clodhoppers.)
Life has been too busy since then to continue my search in earnest -- until yesterday. Yesterday I went to Nordstrom and took a desultory little tour around the shoe department. It just confirmed that I couldn't wear any of the cute shoes. But then an employee offered her services. I still can't believe it, but she managed to find 3 pairs that I thought were pretty cute, and they actually fit! I was so pleased, I bought them all, even though it far exceeded my new shoe budget.
They may not be the shoes I would have chosen if I had no foot concerns, and they were certainly more expensive than my usual Target or T.J. Maxx finds, but... I am thrilled that function doesn't completely have to exclude style.
{In case you're wondering about the sandals, the doc said I might be able to find a pair that I could wear without pain. I figured Danskos were my best bet, and since I bought them at Nordstrom, I can wear them around and find out. yippee! I love sandals.}

2:55am! What on earth!?
Your shoes were very cute last night. I can't believe that pile of cute shoes you had... heavenly. I have a hard time spending money on shoes but have given into wearing tennis shoes more so my heels don't ache.
Jimmy's dad recently had surgery on both of his feet for this condition. I think he has to have one of the feet done again soon. Not fun, I hope you don't get to that point.
Congratulations on your find of three great new pairs of shoes.
I'm so glad you could find 3 pairs of shoes you liked and that are comfortable. They all look adorable!
There is some orthotic store here that is advertising an insert that you can wear even with sandals for plantar fasciitis, so maybe you can find something like that to help give you more future options. At least you'll have happier feet in Paris, right?
Oh Michelle- I feel for you. This is something that my mom and all her sisters and a few brothers have had to deal with. My mom had surgery that went so well and my one aunt has had it done now and wishes she would have done it sooner. I will see what they say about finding cute shoes that work.
I agree with Amie- the ones you had on last night were SOOOO cute. I would be mourning the loss of barefoot summers, though, I won't lie.
Yay for finding cute shoes! I love Danskos and I agree--those are always a good bet for style and comfort. I wear my Danskos ALL the time :) That's a bummer about having to clean out your shoes. Have fun finding more cute finds! (Think of it as the eternal quest/adventure: find cute doctor-approved shoes--I'm sure you'll be surprised at your cute results!)
Oh, that is heart wrenching to have to rid all of those cute shoes. Who ever gets them will be a lucky recipient. Bummer about flip flops and bare foot. I would be SO upset about those.
Glad you at least found some ones to replace the others. :)
I'm so sorry about having to give up the flip flops and sandals. I too would have been upset too if I had to get rid of all of my cute shoes. The girls that get those will be so excited.
I so love the shoes from Nordstroms. Very cute!
Michelle. Dear Michelle. You are just much too good a person to have to get rid of all those shoes! Being a shoe lover myself I literally gasped when I saw the stash you got rid of. It pained me! I am so sorry about your feet. You did manage to find some great new shoes though. I love all three of your new finds and hope you log many happy miles in them. I also hope you find other shoes that please you equally so!
Oh the shoes! Surely you can come up with a crafty solution to remember your fabulous shoes?
Have you tried Crocs? I know they are trendy and all, but they really are super comfy. Their website has cute ballet flat styles and everything.
Sorry about the bummer news.
I have this mostly in my right foot, and it sucks. Every time you would describe it here on your blog, I was thinking 'NO!' not another on to fall to this annoying and painful foot thing! (I know quite a few people that have it.)
I feel so much better with shoes on although I used to be a barefoot mama. Crocs really do help and while I don't love the style of them, my feet feel so much better in them. AND they have a flip flop style that is quite cute with the accompanying support you (I) need. In lots of colors I might add. I am going to try the mary jane style this year, I think they're cuter.
And don't get rid of all those shoes, you can sneak a wear in every now and then. At least I do. Sometimes a girl must go with style, even if it is only for a couple hours.
I love the 3 new pair though, I might go looking myself. Wow this got long! Sorry!
I knew you had a lot of shoes, but that photo of the ones you got rid of is still shocking to me! Whoa.
I'm so glad you found several cute pairs to help you out. They're all darling and will make your feet so much happier. I don't think we should ever use the term hammer toes again.
Oh, how I miss Nordstrom's shoe dept!! that is so great that you found some cute ones. They actually are helpful now and then. Surprise surprise.
Just in case you haven't thought of it, don't forget that you can find stuff like that on Ebay. Dansko, Born, Merrill whatever. Now you know what size you wear. Might ask Adam about the one he buys his shoes from. I think the seller is Grapevine Hill. Hope that helps.
My most favorite pair of shoes is my Puma Mostros. They are so comfortable and I think they are great style (that is subjective, I know). I don't even want to think about throwing out any my shoes. You are a strong woman.
The shoes you were wearing on Friday night were a find indeed. So cute I wanted a pair for myself.
I am sorry you had to get rid of so many shoes. How depressing. But at least you know it just isn't worth the pain. The 3 pairs that you bought are very cute. Just think now you get to start all over.
Michelle--I'm so sorry to hear about your feet. That must have been terrible to hear. I just love your new shoes, however, and I am a huge fan of Danskos. And I never even knew they had sandals (I wear the clogs) so I'm going to have to check those out!
Oh you poor girl! I love shoes too, so I know your pain on having to get rid of the ones you love. I've seen some people wearing their orthotics with sandals (flip flops too).
Those shoes you found at Nordstroms are certainly cute. I have a pair of Dansko's which I love, and Merrills are very comfortable! Those Merrills you have pictured are sooo cute! Love them!
wow, that is a lot to take in. i am so pleased that you have found a few pair and now that you know what styles work and your size you will hopefully have better luck at finding them elsewhere. (though nordstrom rocks, doesn't it??)
you have had a lot going on, michelle! i love that you are finding a positive in almost every set back though-- that says a lot!
I love those Dansko sandals! The others are cute, too.
That "anonymous" was me--I pushed something by mistake.
Those green nike's are adorable!
