deep thoughts

As I was browsing through books on Amazon tonight, I came across this quote from an author named Patricia Hampl:
She writes that because "everyone 'has' a memoir, we all have a stake in how such stories are told. For we do not, after all, simply have experience; we are entrusted with it."
Isn't that fascinating? Of course it brought to mind blogging, and the creative writing class that Jill dragged me to (thanks, Jill!). I just love the idea of being entrusted with our experiences. It really seems to underscore the need for us to record them. And if we can somehow find our way to making that a creative endeavor, and/or coming up with an entertaining finished product, so much the better!

I like that- entrusted with experience. What a great thought and way to look at keeping the record of our everyday lives. Although they seem mundane sometimes, they are still what we are living and deserve to be recorded. Love it Michelle!

I like the word entrusted, but I'm more struck by the part about us having a stake in how such stories are told. How true and interesting is that?!

Our blogs would be completely different if an outsider watched us for a day and then wrote about what we did. They would see the messes, the drudgery, the short tempers, and the exhaustion, instead of the humor, love, and progress that we see everyday. I'd much rather tell my own story!

I love everything about that quote. "Entrusted" is a very powerful word and it makes me realize even more how control I am of my own life and my own happiness. I so wish I was a better writer to make my life more interesting, but it's not enough to keep me from putting down my thoughts. "We all have a stake in how such stories are told." Love that.

Great point, Jill. I was struck by having a stake in our own stories, too, but I think I was too tired last night when I was writing this post.

I would hate to read someone else's version of my story!

Entrusted is a great word. I have thought a lot lately about recording my daily doings, I keep a journal but sometimes I think I need to do more.

What a cool quote. The problem with me is that I just can't write. So my writing is very juvenile. I love all the words you use. So true that everyone has their own story.

I don't have much more to add except - You and Jill make great points!

Yeah, that reminds me of President Hinckley's devotional where he told us to "record the experiences worth remembering." We are "entrusted" with our lives, so why would we not want to write things down and preserve them? That was an excellent insight Michelle!

what a great thought! we really are entrusted with so much. and like amy said, we really are the writers our our lives and stories. we really determine how they will turn out before the end ever comes. i love it!

I thought I commented the other day.

I love the quote or idea that "No one can write your story". Really- can anyone else be expected to document your life correctly if they didn't live it? Love the quote. I agree with Amy- it is very empowering.
