surprise party

Remember several months ago, when I was asking for input on how to celebrate Marc's tenure? Well, trips came along, as well as illnesses, and just general busyness. It took me awhile, but I finally did something to properly celebrate this big achievement: I threw him a surprise party last Saturday.

(Incidentally, it was great timing that this came about during the long spell where I had no internet access. Because I was so busy, it kept me from feeling so mad about not being able to get online...) It took me all my spare time on Monday and Tuesday to make the invitations and look up all the addresses I needed. Most of the rest of the week was devoted to cooking. Here was the menu: rolls from Shirley's bakery, barbecued brisket, Green Green Salad, german chocolate cake, chocolate angel food cake, Denise's homemade chocolate chip cookies, and hot citrus punch.

I really didn't know if I would be able to pull off the surprise, but I did it! Marc kept asking about all the food I was making. I told him the cakes were for a neighbor's wedding reception, and the brisket was for the R.S. supper before the broadcast. Yes, I lied to my husband. I had to make up some excuse because I couldn't get all the cooking done while he was away at work. On Friday night, he was starting to get annoyed at all the work I was doing and asked if anyone else in the ward was helping out! I thought he was on to me when he pointed out that the neighbor having a wedding is in catering and so it was pretty strange that I would need to make cakes for them. I covered by acting surprised by it as well. Max and Lucas knew all about it, but never spilled the secret. Lucas even shocked me by whispering about it -- I didn't know he was capable of whispering!

(Jessie made the darling sign)

I got his best friend to invite him over to play video games, with the ruse of going out to lunch afterwards. Then, instead of going to lunch, he brought him to the park. We had the most beautiful weather on Saturday -- sunny, blue skies, and crisp, not too cold -- I had been pretty worried when it rained for most of the week. I was a little bit disappointed by all of the people who couldn't make it (including Jill & Randy), but we still had a pretty good turnout and I know Marc had a good time. I even got to see my cousin Charlotte finally! (She came out about a month ago to start school at BYU.)

Eva loved the balloons, and Grandma was very obliging.

All in all, it turned out to be a great day. It was so nice to have Marc's parents and sister there to chase Eva all over the park; she could not have been happier, and I was free to introduce people to each other, serve food, etc. The only down side was that I got stung by a bee on my finger. The last time I got stung was when I was 18 (in a restaurant in the Poconos). Dang, those little critters can really hurt! We came home and relaxed, and I even took a nap. Words cannot express my relief when it was all over, and this week seems just heavenly without a huge project and a time deadline hanging over me.

It sounds like a wonderful party. I am glad you were able to get everything done in time. The menu sounds delicious.
Congrats to Mark for getting tenure. I can only think of the line that Ross says to Rachel when he gets tenure but maybe I shouldn't repeat it :)

Way to go Michelle! I can't believe you pulled off the surprise while cooking in front of him!! I never could have held the poker face!

I love the colors, and the food sounds amazing. Congratulations on pulling off the surprise, those can be tricky.

I can't stand how cute that table cloth is--of course it matches/echoes the design of the invite--no surprise. Sounds like you had a great time, I'm impressed that you can lie so well! (And I must say that I'm quite honored to actually have the cookie recipe named after me.)

It's so great you did something to celebrate. I am always wanting to do something for my hubby but never quite getting to it. When he finishes his masters I have vowed to follow through with my celebration plans. I will think of you for motivation!

Elisa, I always have good intentions, but somehow I never seem to give my best energies to my husband. It felt good to do it for a change!

Sounds like you threw a GREAT party--and a surprise one to boot! They are hard to keep a secret. You're invitations were DARLING!

And congrats on tenure, we've had friends who have gone through it, and it sounds like it can be a process!

Your invitations look great! And I am way impressed you pulled off the surprise. I am the worst at keeping a secret around my husband. I am currently trying to get his whole family to fly out for graduation to surprise him this year. We'll see if I can pull it off.

I'm glad everything went so well. I love the table cloth and the sign Jessie made. I will have to remember that....Jill showed me her cute invitation in real life...so cute!

I love the feeling of working hard for a big party and then the relief of being done. I bet Marc loved it. I loved that you pulled off the surprise. (I surprised Jimmy for his 30th and was so happy when he said he didn't have a clue!)

The party was wonderful, Michelle, even the weather cooperated. You chose a great place. The park was beautiful. Good work Max and Lucas for helping your Mom surprise Dad. We loved having fun with Eva and meeting many friends of you and Marc. Love to each one of you.

You.are.so.cute. (those table cloths! the cards!)

I totally would have blown it- I threw Nick a "surprise" party this year, and as soon as he saw me pick up a cleaning instrument, he knew something was VERY WRONG. haha

Congratulations!

Oh I am so glad you had a good time and that the weather cooperated. Congratulations for his tenure. I am sorry about the bee...gosh so tiny and so much discomfort. Well I am sure he was happy he could enjoy all the tasty food you prepared.

Congratulations again to Marc and your family! It's such an accomplishment!

You must be the master of deception, though, to be preparing a ton of food right in front of him without his guessing. It's one of the good things about waiting so long to celebrate--he was truly surprised because he never could have seen it coming! Sometimes things are better late!

It's only taken me a month to comment on this post, so sorry, I thought I had caught up from being on my trip.

I'm so sorry we had to miss the big celebration and I'm sorry I was of no help to you with all the food prep, set up, and everything else. Next time you need to plan Marc's party around me! Ha.

I'm so happy that everything went so splendidly, and I still can't believe he wasn't suspicious of all the cooking you did. I guess that speaks well of you and your willingness to help others, because he didn't really need to question it. Nice.

I LOVE the polka-dot table cloth.

So sorry you got stung by a bee, how did that happen?
