Max the champ

We went to get Max's teeth pulled yesterday afternoon and he pulled through it beautifully. The setup they have at this pedodontist's office is so great: Game Cube, and even better than at home: Max said he wished he had some great wireless headphones like these of his own. Check out the flat screen mounted on the ceiling!

It was funny because I could gauge how he was doing by the activity on the screen. If he was uncomfortable, the game would pause for a minute. He was playing pretty much through the whole procedure, so I knew he was doing alright.

First they had to do an impression for the appliance that he will have to wear to keep his teeth spread apart while the new ones grow in. I hate getting impressions -- ick! -- and so did Max. That was pretty much the only time the game was on pause. Then they gave him laughing gas and he was such a crack-up, he had a big smile the whole time. I guess it made him feel pretty happy.

As usually happens with me, the novacaine didn't have enough effect, so they had to give him three sets of shots to get him numb enough. Once he was finally numb and the dentist started pulling, it was over in 5 minutes! They had to give him 4 treasure chests to hold them all. The nurses and receptionists were amazed that he did so well and they didn't even hear any sound from his room. What, do they usually hear screaming?

The bleeding stopped after a little while and he didn't even have much pain. They instructed him not to eat anything sharp or crunchy for three days. Unfortunately, he can't eat much, since he has four gaping holes in his mouth, but the tooth fairy rewarded him with a $20 bill! Sweet. I took some after pictures, but they all turned out blurry for some unknown reason. I have got to get out my camera manual and figure out what I'm doing wrong.

So glad things went well- I guess they only had to pull 4 instead of the 8? Hope so because 4 sounds bad enough as it is. He looks like he isn't too traumatized either, so that is a plus.

During all my filling and the root canal I watched movies- so nice! I don't think I could do it any other way now.

Nope, he got all 8 out at once! He was doing so well that they decided to get it all over with. They pulled them out in pairs -- that's why he has 4 giant holes.

Wow! He is a champ. My brother n' law is a pediatric dentist and has cool stuff like that in his office. They also dress in bright clownlike apparell. Its amazing all the technology stuff they have out now.

Just out of curiosity who is your pediatric dentist. My good friends brother is one in the Orem area. Just wondering.

Jenny, our ped. dentist is Dr. Bruce Howell, his office is right down the street from our house.

I am so thrilled that he had such an easy time of it. I'm sure it helped that the dentist's office was so cool and that he could play GameCube to distract himself. He has turned into a champ all of the sudden and I'm so happy for him and for you.

Wow! I love your tooth fairy.

And...I hate going to the dentist. It's one of my least favorite places to go. I'm glad that Max is feeling OK.

How fun to have a game cube, what a way to keep the kids distracted.
I'm glad he had a smile on his face in the after picture.
It's so nice that it wasn't too bad of an experience for either of you.

Oh, my--what a brave kid! I had to have one tooth pulled when I was young, and I remember it being not that big a deal. But that was only one! I can't begin to imagine 8!

Hey, does your digital camera have a viewfinder like a regular camera? Try lookinght through the viewfinder instead of looking at the picture while you're taking it. Maybe you're shaking the camera too much. Or, didi you drop it? I had a digintal camera once that I dropped and it never took a good picture again. I hope that's not the problem!

Those pictures of Max are great, he's having a fab time. I'm glad that things went well and they were able to medicate him effectively. I love dentists that use distration to help with the pain and anxiety. Way to go Max!

WTG Max!
I worked as a dental assistant for awhile and pulling teeth is no easy job for the dentist or patient. :)

Max-man! Wow, am I impressed! I guess those games must have more interest than I can imagine! It shows how much concentration it takes to be successful playing, I guess. The pictures make you look way too old, however....slow down, I'm afraid you'll be on your mission before I know it! Good luck with the recooperation---you need a good stash of Rita's water ice!!! I love you.
