frustration

I don't know what's going on with our iMac, but it's having serious problems. It keeps telling me that I don't have enough memory -- to do anything, really! -- down in double-digit MB now somehow. So I keep deleting things to free up more memory (saving photos to CD & deleting them from the computer, etc.). It will say I have 2.5 gigs, then the next time I sit down to do something, it says I have 15 MB. What the hell?! I haven't even been able to get online because there is not enough free memory. Last night after book club, I deleted still more stuff, but no luck. I'm not sure why it's letting me on today, but it probably won't last, so I'm hurrying to type something up! (no way I can load photos...)

Marc told me to download a program that is small and evaluates your hard drive, showing you where all the memory is allocated. So I tried, but I don't have enough memory to even get it downloaded!! I'm seriously wondering if we have a weird virus or something...

Anyway, here's a little bit of what's going on chez moi:

My neighbor/exercise partner Heidi and I finally got together this morning. We will probably only work out together on Tuesdays & Thursdays because her daughter wants to exercise with her on the other weekdays. We rode our bikes at the track and did 5 miles! It's so surprising to me how one section of the track feels a lot harder than the rest, when it appears to be totally flat. I guess that's indicative of my extremely low fitness level right now. It was pretty easy at first, but by the end it was tough. When I got off my bike, I totally had Gumby legs, as Heidi says. (many of you are probably too young to remember Gumby, but not me!) I figured out that I was not strapping Eva in correctly, which accounts for her being able to wriggle out of the seat belts last time. All was well for this ride. Success!

I didn't lose any weight last week, but I did exercise 4 times, and so I'm counting that as a good week. I know that I overate on two different days. It's interesting, I'm really noticing that I feel better when I eat well and don't eat too much. (How do you get to be 35 before making these very basic realizations?!)

Amy W. sent me a package! Such a pleasant surprise. I wish I could include a photo, because everything was color coordinated: a copy of her Windsor Pilates DVD (can't wait to try it!), the cutest argyle notebook, Orbit gum, and a darling card. I love that she said, "I'll warn you that you'll feel like a dork with a few moves - just go with it :)". So cute. Thanks, Amy!

I got a postcard in yesterday's mail announcing that an Archiver's store will be opening up in our mall! It didn't say when, but they're starting to hire, so hopefully soon. I've never been to this store, but I've always wanted to. The ads make it look SO appealing! Maybe now I'll actually have to go to the mall...

I had a Jessie sighting yesterday! Eva and I went to go see Jessie and Bella for a little while. You would have thought it was Christmas morning the way the babies were so excited when they saw each other. It's sad how infrequently we get together. We're going to try to set up a regular playdate for the babies (and us too!). Jessie showed me all the projects she's been working on lately -- painfully cute, as usual. She said she has been putting all of the energy she used to spend blogging into scrapbooking, etc. She has a lot of great stuff to show for it, but I sure wish she could do both.

Last night was book club night, and we actually discussed a book! Woohoo! It felt like forever. We talked about Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. I don't think we all loved it equally, but I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it. It provided some very interesting insights into Chinese culture (albeit from the 19th century) and asked some intriguing questions about friendship and the nature of love. Definitely some good food for thought.

I was able to fulfill my part of Tasha's Operation Good Cheer on Tuesday. I sent a book for Liz and one for each of her children, a cross stitch pattern, a cute notebook, and a PowerBar and some sugarless candies. Want to know the best part? I only ended up spending $1.50 + shipping! How cool is that? (I got two of the books from D.I. for $.75 each, and I had all the rest of the stuff on hand.) I was very excited to get that sent off, even if I couldn't use one of my cute good mail stickers that Jill made me.

I have discovered since the boys went back to school that I am having a time management crisis. Why does it seem so much harder to get stuff done with them gone most of the day? Part of it is having to work around nap and school schedules. But the rest must just be a serious efficiency problem. I told Jill that I think I need a wife. Or maybe a personal assistant. I can't seem to manage on my own. Perhaps I need to schedule everything out? I usually avoid that, and work off of my to-do lists, but it's not working for me anymore.

Well, off to Costco, finally. Got to hurry and stock up before this month's money is all gone! I hope to figure out my computer woes soon and get back to business as usual.

I'm bummed you couldn't post photos, but at least you're blogging.

Congrats on the 5 mile bike ride with Heidi, that's fantastic. I think you're doing such a great job exercising regularly that you shouldn't stress too much about the food. Moderation is a good thing, but if this is a life-long healthy switch you don't want to make yourself crazy by depriving yourself of things you love. I'm just so impressed with your bike riding, Gumby legs are good.

I'm concerned about your time management crisis and seriously think you should make an excel sheet or something so you can map out where your time goes each day. I hate it when I can't account for my day, and think it would be interesting to see where the time goes.

Computer problems are always a big huge bummer. A couple of years ago my husbands laptop crashed and that was just AWFUL. Needless to say I was transcribing medical junk at the time and not good timing.

I hope you get things fixed soon! I hear ya on the school/nap thing. I feel like I really only have about 2 hours a day to run errands before having to put the boys to bed.

I have seriously given thought to stop and scrapbook and go on blogger hiatus too for a while. It really is hard to do both. But less hard to type on a computer than drag all the scrapbook stuff out.

I remember Gumby! I used to actually own a shirt with him on it in 6th grade. Too funny.

Way to go getting your operation out! My week is so far away I just hope I remember (I think its in April or something)

Glad you liked the package. I wish I could have sent you a copy the original 20 minute Windsor Pilates but I only have that on VHS. The one I sent you is a little more advanced, but I hope you like it. Good luck on the computer stuff--hate it! I'm with you on the time management stuff lately!

I've never thought of an Excel sheet for time management! I would love to see where my time goes every day, I feel like I accomplish very little on any given day, especially now that I'm working part time.

Isn't that always the question, where does the time go? Could it possibly be that you think you have so much more time with your boys gone that you don't spend it wisely? That's what happens to me--I start to think about time as a finite thing (and though it is, the hours in a single day aren't!) and waste more than I usually would. Great idea to make a spreadsheet.

Way to go with the 5 mile ride and all of the exercising you've been doing lately. It will pay off with weight loss results. Sometimes it just takes a while.

I hope you figure out your computer problems soon. Maybe you should call up the Apple Store at the Gateway and see if the techs at the Genius Bar can help you. Or, did you buy Apple Care when you bought your computer? Maybe they can help.

Computer issues are such a downer- hopefully you don't have a virus.

5 miles is so great- and that you were pulling the extra trailer weight. So cool. All your baby steps are adding up. You'll have to let us know how the pilates goes.

I think time management is all about perspective and attitude and energy. When I stopped working I was amazed at all the energy I had to do things because I didn't have work looming. I wish I could get that perspective back and get my butt in gear. Why is it that we all have the same hours in a day, yet other people seem to accomplish so much more than me?

I too love all that Jessie has been creating lately- she is so talented it makes me sick sometimes. I just wish she would come back to the blogging world to say hi every now and then.

You might want to see how much it would cost to get the additional memory. We just upgraded our mac w/ some more memory and it is like a NEW computer. How much memory do you have? Amy's husband is some kind of mac expert, so he might be able to enlighten you on how to fix the problem.

Congrats on the bike ride. Very cool.

I'm impressed with the bike ride. I love the feeling of wobbly legs. It means that you were working hard!

Sorry about the computer. I wonder why there is always something expensive that needs to be fixed or replaced. Currently ours are: a/c, dishwasher, soft water, car a/c, car tires. Crazy!!! Good luck.

5 miles! Awesome

A time management spread sheet would be my worst nightmare, then I would have to acknowledge how much time I waste.

I hope you get your computer back to normal soon. I know mine is on it's last leg and I try to be very kind to it!

I hate computer problems and feel for you. so sorry.

Way to go with your exercising plans. I am glad you found someone to go with to help during the days you don't want to. It always helps me.

I love to hear that all is well with Jessie. I miss reading her blog and hope that she is enjoying what she is involved with now. She certainly is so talented. I understand how blogging can get out of hand and take your mojo. I try to take it one day at a time and put no pressure on myself.

I am right there with you about the management crisis. Maybe we should have jill teach us a class or something. I'm already going to take her advice and keep a journal.
