OK -- help!!! I am in dire need of instruction in the fine art of hairstyling. Since Eva's hair is looking increasingly like a mullet, I decided I had to do something, so I put her hair in pigtails for the first time. It doesn't look so bad from the front, but if you could only see the back...
I have never had any real skills with fixing my own hair, and now it's looking like my daughter may be doomed to having dumb hair unless someone intervenes. I used a comb, I tried to part it down the center, but you couldn't tell at all! It looked like I just grabbed some hair and put it up. Anyone have any pointers for a mom trying to save her little child from having stupid hair?

She is too cute! I have the same issues with Mya and have found that the older she gets, the more practice I get and the better it is looking. But there are still days where I say to hell with it- at least it is outta her face. For me getting the comb a little wet helped a ton. That and using the medium sized rubber bands instead of the small or large ones. Good luck!
Cute picture. I often think that the hair issue is why I don't have any girls. I think that there is a fine art to doing a little girl's hair. It's amazing what some women can do.
what do you mean by that silly comment by not being able to fix your own hair. you had the best hair in S-hall!
girl you got skills!
my only bit of advice is let the bangs grow, it is tough but will be worth it in the end. we cut carolines and i regret it!
Sally jane ain't getting no bangs!
I have no advice either. I feel exactly like you, my girls are doomed! Emily is five and still has such whispy fine hair that styling is a joke. Even when I "style" it, there is so much that just falls out and covers her face. It is long enough finally for sponge curlers, so that's our favorite. I pray my girls get good friends who will make up for my total inability to do anything more than get out the tangles!!
So adorable. I remember the pictures I took of Olivia's thin wispy hair in the first pigtails. I too am AWFUL at doing hair (my own, as well as my daughter's) but I just use the method you described, so I dont know what to tell you. Keep practicing? It did seem that after a while her hair learned to follow where the comb was taking it. At first it was very unruly. These days she usually pulls it out after all that work because, "Mommy, I like it LONG, like yours."
I wish you luck. Just remember, anything is better than the mullet look! Even unruly pigtails.
I think it looks darling!
It looks like actual pigtails rather than what I did to Evie when I tried to do hers the first time!
She is too cute!
I think shes cute regardless. Do you know how to french braid? I used to do the front of Taylors hair when she had a mop on her head. The key is getting it REALLY wet and then putting a bunch of gel in it. I would have to agree with Kristi--grow the bangs. I never have cute Taylors and am so glad I did. You could also twist the top too. Ohh can you tell I miss doing hair. Rats! I have three little boys and only one girl.
I meant cut.
that picture looks so cute. i think that it is hard when their hair is sooo little and thin...I think jenny is right to get it wet and then attack. but I love little girls with bows they are the most adorable thing ever! My mom has pictures when she was little with these huge bows that cover practically her whole head! I wish I had a scanner I would show you.... I was lucky growing up...we had a maid/nanny and I remember she would ask me every morning...how do you want your hair today??? I still miss that and wish it would last forever.
Wetting it is a great suggestion. Other than that, I would say to try to get the part straight I either stand behind and have her look back at me. Then I start from the bridge of her nose and take the comb straight back. Or you can stand in front of her and do the same thing from the nose and straight back. When their hair is so short you might only put up the front half in pigtails. That way it's out of her face but long enough to stay in the p-tails. I have lots of experience doing girls hair. I put jessica's up every day many different ways to keep it out of her face (she drools on it otherwise). YUCK! Anyway, good luck.
P.S. Look at the way other mom's do their kids hair at church. I get so many ideas from looking at the other girls.
OK Julie, I do look at how other moms have done their girls' hair. I see it, I admire it, but that doesn't help me figure out how to do it!! I guess I'm just challenged. Here's hoping that lots of practice will improve my skills...
That picture is darling, she looks so big all the sudden. I have no advice about hair stuff because I have no skills myself. Thank heaven Whitney has good hair, my only advice is to pay for good haircuts when she has enough hair to style. There really should be training for this type of thing.
Michelle, try pulling the top part of her hair into a pony tail - not so that she has a water fountain on her head - but further back! It was the only thing that Nicole wouldn't pull out when she was that age. Then head to the library and check out books on cute do's! That is how I learned to meet all my girls hair needs!
Eva looks so cute with her pigtails! So cute! Here are my tips:
Wet the brush not the hair--there is such a thing as too wet hair!
Get a small to medium sized round brush with very dense bristles and wet it before you brush. You'll hardly need to use a comb to make a good part.
Pigtails are hard! I prefer to do half up. Squirmy little girls don't like to have their hair done-not matter how many times their moms tell them they look adorable when it's all done. Sitting still is the enemy!
I second the motion for a good haircut. She's too cute!
I always do it will damp hair and use hairspray. I think some people refuse to use hair spray on toddlers but will all that fine wispy hair it is a must. We also had one of the yw in our ward have a little class where we brought our girls and she taught us a couple of cute things - totally helped.
I also vote for no bangs.
My kids all had quite the mullet. Hope you know all kids go through it. Funny that you posted about this because I just put megan in her first piggies a few days ago.
She looks so cute and grown up.
