she is so the boss of me

Finally, back online. It's been a weird few days for me. Here are a few highlights:

On Saturday we totally cleaned out the boys' room. We've picked it up, straightened it, but it's been quite awhile since we emptied out drawers, organized the closet, under the bed, etc. When I went to bed that night, I felt like all was right with the world because my boys were tucked in bed in their completely clean room. Yeah, so I'm weird.

On Sunday I was in such a funk. I don't know if it was my Primary lesson (I subbed) that didn't go as well as I had hoped, or hormones, or the cumulative effects of having a whiny, clingy baby, or sleep deprivation, or what. Probably all of the above. Nothing was pulling me out of it, so I just had to go to bed and start over.

On Monday I weighed myself. I lost 3 pounds since last week! It's entirely possible that the weight loss is due to the fact that I had my period last time I weighed, but at this point I don't care. I'm just glad to be doing something good for myself. I exercised 4 times last week (it's a miracle, really) and I felt like I was making much more conscious decisions about what I was eating.

I discovered that it's true what I've read about people eating more when they don't get enough sleep. When I felt relatively well-rested, I had a much easier time being rational about deciding what and when to eat. When I was a walking zombie, I felt totally out of control. I didn't make such good decisions and I know I ate a lot more, just to do something to make myself feel better, more awake, whatever. I did not like those days.

I took Max back to the dentist on Tuesday for an orthodontic consult. He has not lost any teeth for over 2 years, and apparently he should have 8 more permanent teeth by now. They say we're nearing the end of our window of opportunity, so they want to pull 8 of his baby teeth now to allow for the permanent ones to move into place! Okay, 1. can you even imagine losing 8 teeth at once? Good grief! and 2. if we're nearing the end of the window of opportunity, why is this the first I've heard of it? The x-ray I was shown was taken in February! Why didn't they alert me to this plan way back then and he could have gone through the tooth pulling fiasco during the summer? His new teeth would have been in by now and he wouldn't have had to deal with the pain and the adjusting to his new mouth during school (and, as Jenn pointed out, 2 weeks before school pictures!!). I'm pretty bugged by this. So we have to go in on the 11th to have impressions made for an appliance that will hold his teeth apart to leave room for the new ones to come in, and have 8 teeth pulled. Poor Max is terrified at the prospect.

Also, our iMac started wigging on us -- spontaneously turning off and then refusing to turn on. We finally figured out that it was dangerously low on memory, largely due to the enormous quantity of digital photos I've been feeding it. Today I finally had the time to load pictures on to my smugmug account and save them to CDs so I could delete them from the hard drive. (I'm not finished yet, you understand, but I have made enough headway that the computer has enough memory to sustain basic functions...)

Our printer suddenly stopped printing due to one color of ink being low. What if I just want to print something in black? Sorry, no go. It's like the print Nazi or something -- no printing for you! I picked up a refill kit yesterday; I wanted to try it out because it is so much more economical than buying 6 new cartridges (as soon as I replace one, all of the others go). I opened the packages, filled the syringe, inevitably spilled some ink, only to discover that the cartridges in there right now that I ordered online cannot be refilled. Oh yeah.

On a happy note, I have some good mail to share:

Amy M. sent me some tiny flowers and the cutest card. Amy, you have such a way with cards. It hurts my heart a little.

Hannah sent me some PowerBars and a cute card. Oh how I love these, they are my new favorite treat! It feels like eating a candy bar, only with protein and fiber. Thanks, Hannah!

Jenny sent me this darling card. I love seeing what other people come up with when they're making cards, and her note was so supportive and encouraging!

Last night we celebrated Jill's birthday -- finally -- at book club. I love the tradition we have of making birthday books for each other. We take advantage of Jenn's fabulous way with making books, and then we all just make a little something to go inside. I'll try to post some photos of the evening tomorrow. Let's just say that a good time was had by all!

Today Eva and I went down to the garage and she played while I put together my bike trailer. I know people have told me to try pulling the trailer without Eva in it, to get used to it, but I don't know if I can wait! She seemed to know it was for her and was anxious to crawl inside. I am nervous about it, since the trailer alone weighs about 25 pounds, but I figure maybe I will take it for a spin down at the track. I can stay on the street to get there, avoiding curbs, and the track is relatively flat. I'll keep you posted. I really don't know if my legs are strong enough for the job!

When we were at Amy's house last night, she sent me home with some pink winter boots for Eva that Kaitlin has outgrown. Eva saw them today and said, I kid you not, "Ooooohh, cooooollll!" Several times. I had to put them on her, even though they are still too big, and she clomped around the house in them for about 1/2 hour. It made quite a picture, what with her summer shorts and all. I practically had to wrestle them off her feet, and then I had to hide them so she wouldn't pester me to wear them again. (it was quite the frustration to walk in them, since they are big and clunky, her legs are very short so the boots come up to her knees, and she has to carry her blanket around with her) But, thanks, Amy, they are quite the hit!

Whew. It's pretty uncool to have to report on five days' worth of stuff all at once. Hopefully I can get back to normal life now, with internet access and all...

Welcome back from your brief hiatus!

8 teeth at once?!? Why in the world would they do that to a poor kid and to his poor mother? So sorry for Max- I hope it all goes well and he doesn't miss too much school.

Congrats on the 3 pound loss! I know how you feel about the lack of sleep affecting what you eat- so frustrating when you have a kid that controls that part of your life. I bet with the biking you will do even better this week. Working out makes me want to eat better.

I hate printer woes and the whole ink extortion. Ridiculious.

I love the book you all made for Jill- so beautiful and inspiring.

Hooray, I'm so glad you're back online. It's not pleasant when there are no updates and no comments from you, I talk to you all the time but still end up feeling out of touch.

I'm wondering what's up with your dentist and the February x-ray, sounds like a dental conspiracy to me. Poor Max.

Congrats on the weightloss, especially when you were in the throes of Smotherhood and could easily have crumbled in a big way. That's awesome! Plus exercising 4 times is amazing too.

Sorry for your printer woes. You can order single color cartridges rather than six at a time from 123inkjets.

I have to tell you that when I was reading fairly quickly I thought is said Marc started wigging out on us.... I was surprised you would reveal that online but was a little disappointed when I read it was just the iMac, I was anticipatiing a funny story.

I all but 3 of my baby teeth pulled, 7 at once in 9th! grade. Tell Max he is lucky to be getting it over with now. Apparently no one new about "the window" when I was a child. The pulling isn't bad it was the very long time with huge gaps that was bad but I am sure that is much different for an eleven year old boy than a 14 year old girl.... I fear for my children!

I'm glad your back! COngratulations on the three pounds!!!

That totally sucks about Max's teeth. We have had our share of dental issues lately and our plan only covers 1 tooth pulled per year. I hope you guys have better coverage than us! YIKES.

Clingy babies are no fun, Weston has been like that lately with a oh so lovely bugery nose. It seems this always happens when my kids go to nursery at church for the first time.

As far as the ink refills. Do you guys have an ink.com store around? Instead of filling them yourselves you can buy the reused cartridges for half the price. We too have a printer that does the no printing for you! (If its on low or gone even if I want only black and white).

Great news on the 3lbs. Remember the slower it comes off the most likely it will stay off! Woo hoo!

Yay! I'm glad you're feeling better and life is getting back to normal! Hope all goes well with the teeth-pulling. Hopefully I'll see you soon!

Congrats on the weight loss that is fantastic news. Exercising 4 times in the week is a major accomplishment. I know I am much better at what I eat when I exercise.
When i was a kid I too had to have a lot of teeth pulled, I think the most I ever had at once was 6, it couldn't have been too bad because I hardly remember it. Hope Max does okay with it.
Our neighbor just gave Kira a cute black jacket from Old Navy (it doesn' fit her daughters anymore) Kira wants to wear it all the time, unfortunately she can't put on jackets for herself yet, so I have to put it on her all the time. After an evening of that, I had to put it up in her closet instead of the hallway closet so that she'd forget about it until it's cold enough to wear. I can only imagine little tiny Eva in big boots... how cute :)

I feel for Max. Poor guy. I hope it goes well.

I agree with your finding that sleep helps with eating choices. I'm the same way. When I'm tired I'll wander to my pantry every 15 minutes wondering why it won't magically produce some chocolate or consuming any junk food it has. I'm going to have to try going to bed earlier and getting up early to exercise, eat better, be a better mom, etc.

Poor Max! I had to have all but two of my baby teeth pulled (for real!!) and most of them all at once when I was a FRESHMAN in high school. I don't think I opened my mouth or talked for MONTHS. I hope Max has a better experience. Better now than when he's in High School!!! Good luck with the weight loss--I too am trying to get down to a "goal" weight.
