Lucas is 7!

I've been awfully busy the last few days preparing for Lucas's 7th birthday. As usual, his birthday has caused me to look back on his life so far and how much he's grown. He has changed so so much during this last year. He used to be extremely cautious about every new experience, and fearful about numerous everyday situations. (Let's not forget about when he was afraid of kittens and butterflies! He was probably only 4 then, though...) He was even pretty creative about his fears -- it wasn't so much that he was afraid to try sledding, more that he just didn't like to sit on red things. And so forth.

Last year, he and Max changed to a new school. I was concerned that Lucas would have difficulty making the adjustment because he was so shy and cautious. But it seems to be the best thing that ever happened to him. He just came out of his shell, became really outgoing, made a lot of new friends, and is, for the most part, a very easy-going, fun guy to be around. I'm sure he won't be going on a roller coaster anytime soon, but what I'm saying is, he's come a long way!

Last night we had a family party with Marc's parents, Marc's sister Michelle and her family, and Jessie's family. We had a good time, and Lucas enjoyed being the guest of honor.

Lucas reading his "7" card, calling to mind the year he turned 4. I asked him how it felt to be four, and he replied that he wasn't four yet, as he had not yet gotten his card (meaning, apparently, a card with a 4 on it). Fortunately, G & G came through that year as well so the boy could officially turn 4!

Lucas, with a spread of most of his favorite foods. He didn't really want a cake, so I made homemade ice cream sandwiches (forgot to take a photo).

Lucas opening his new scooter from Grandma and Grandpa Winegar.

Today is his actual birthday and we had a Pokemon party, complete with Pokeball invitations, and a Pokemon trivia quiz. We tried to convince Lucas to go bowling or miniature golfing, but he could not be persuaded. The Pokemon party was a lot of work, but it seemed to be a hit.

The boys having a Nintendo pokemon battle.

Lucas opening the Star Wars III movie from Landon.

everyone inventing their own Pokemon

Pokeball cupcakes

some fast-paced Pokemon card trading

Tonight, Marc and the boys are having a living room sleepover and watching Lucas's new Star Wars DVD. To sum up, I'm glad Lucas had a great birthday, and I'm equally glad it's over!

You are amazing Michelle! It looked like he had quite the day thanks to you! I hope you get the whole bed to yourself tonight- Eva sleeps through, and tomorrow you get some peace and quiet at some point in your day.

Happy birthday to Lucas! It sounds like the party was a hit, and I'm sure you are very glad it's over. Are you still sleep deprived? We haven't had a friend party for Kaitlin, obviously, she's two and doesn't have any friends really. But every year I wear myself out just doing the family party. I can't imagine the pressure of a friend party. Yikes!

I have such mixed feelings about birthdays. Mine sucked growing up so I want my kids to have good ones but I give Kate a friend party in February and that basically does me in for the rest the year, they are so terrible! Megan had a friend party once and that's it. Soren and Emily, never. My point is, what a good mom you are to have, organize, prepare and execute a friend party- it looks like it was a success!

The party was a smashing success and the photos are very cute. You did such a great job on the invitations, cupcakes and all the games, you really went all out.

Lucas looks so happy in the pictures. He sure has come a long way in the past couple years. Kittens, butterflies and red things oh my!

Those cupcakes look yummy!
I hope Lucas had a great day (which by the photos I would say he did) and that the next year brings great things.

Michelle,
He is such a handsome kiddo! I love the "he wasn't afraid to try sledding, just to sit on red things". He is going to be wonderful and unique, very un-boring not at all a cookie-cutter image. That party was great. He must have felt like king for a day, which is the point, right? My mom HATED birthday parties, I had one sleep over and she got so mad at me at about 11 pm, she made me come sleep in her room, I was mortified... Maybe I will do friend parties every other year or something? Who knows? If Evie is my only child, what am I going to do, make her just celebrate with Dave and I every other year?

At any rate, you are an awesome mom!

That's a big day for a 7 year old! How fun for him. Those cupcakes are surprisingly cute - I didn't not expect anything about Pokemon to be cute. I am glad everything went well. I hope you got lots of sleep while the boys had their slumber party.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LUCAS!!
Looks like a party for a KING! He certainly has come a long way in the past couple of years. I remember "walking the line" with him. He is fun to be with...such a cute guy, and growing so fast!

You're right! We do have boys born on the same day! Well happy birthday to Lucas. You were a much more creative one than me this year--great job! I'm sure he loved it. Good job taking pictures of all your work. My theory is I want my kids to know all I did for them when they grow up and say I'm no fun!
