drains

I read an article recently about emotional drains -- things in our lives that weigh us down and effectively drain us of our energy. I've been thinking about this a lot and I know that the clutter and disorganization that abounds in my home acts as this kind of drain on me. I guess that's the main reason I decided to embark on a massive de-cluttering effort while Marc has been away. (I haven't conquered every room in the house, but I think I have made some serious headway.)

Anyway, I've been thinking about this for awhile now, and I've been meaning to write a post about it. Well lo and behold, something happened tonight that forced me to post about drains. Eva was in bed, the boys were quietly playing, and I finally had an opportunity to escape and have a leisurely shower to wash away the sweat and detritus that accumulated during this long, beasty hot day. As I was putting conditioner in my hair, I happened to look down and notice that the bottles of shampoo and such were floating in about three inches of water. There has never been any sign of this shower not draining well, so how does that suddenly happen? I decided I'd better rinse quickly and get out before I had an overflow problem. Sadly, I was not quick enough. I'm not sure how the water rose with such lightning speed.

I turned the water off and stood there, waiting for the water to recede. Nothing. I thought, surely something will start to happen here, slowly but steadily, this water will have to go down, right? No. I got kind of excited when I heard a little dripping sound, but then I realized it was the water seeping over the threshold and onto the bathroom floor. Dang it! I was afraid to open the door for fear of opening the floodgates. I couldn't call one of my sons to bring me the plunger because then he would have to see me naked, and we would both be scarred by that.

So I waited some more. Then, I mustered up the courage to lift the drain cover and reach in to see if I could find a clog. (EWWWWW!!!) Nope, nothing there. What gives? Finally, I decided I had no choice but to open the door, hop out, and close it again as quickly as possible. It was amazing how much water got all over the bathroom floor. I have two rugs on the floor, and I put down two bath sheet-sized towels, and it's still soaked. (By the way, this bathroom -- not including the tiny shower -- is about 4 feet by 5 feet, if that.)

It has been about an hour and the water still has not receded. What's a girl to do? I'm wondering if I need to run to the store and get some of that magic 3-second drain stuff you see commercials for, but now my kids are all asleep. Good grief.

**UPDATE: Probably 15 minutes after I published this post, I heard a knock at my door. I couldn't fathom who it could be, unless maybe Jill. I went down to see who was there and it was Jessie's husband, Timm, with a toolbox and a bottle of drain cleaner in his hand. He happened to be online and read my post, was annoyed that I hadn't called him for help, and drove right over, even though he was at my house ALL DAY working. My hero!! **

How funny, as I was reading this I was thinking "oh drat, and Timm was just there all day," I should have known he would be all over it and come to your rescue. What was the mystery clog?

I was thinking the same thing! Timm is so amazing, Jessie is lucky to have him!

It's still a mystery. He left some drain cleaner with me in case the problem recurs...

I'm glad that Timm was able to fix your problem; a working shower isn't exactly something one can do without. I have dealt with icky drains before in cleaning, and they can be a pain.

clogs in general are gross, especially when they're wet ones. Because everything is all wet and soggy and sticking together and making funny smells. So bravo to Timm who braved the shower clog, especially since he had already been at your house all day working like a fiend.
Don't you just love family?

Kudos to Timm for coming to rescue once again--he is truly the ultimate handy man! I hate drain problems and I love knowing someone who knows how to fix them! Yay!

It is one thing to be a handy man, it is quite another to have a willing attitude...to show up at the drop of a hat (or the clogging of a drain)!! That's TIMM!

What a lucky girl you are to have such a great brother-in-law. I love to have family who can be counted on to help out. And without even being asked. What an amazing guy.
