first birthday!

Yesterday was Eva's birthday. I can't seem to wrap my mind around the fact that she is a year old already. I wonder if I'll ever understand the paradox of the passage of time: I simultaneously feel like she can't possibly be one & that it's hard to remember my life before she came into it. Does everyone feel that way?

On Saturday night I brought up three toys from the garage that she had never seen and cleaned them up: a xylophone, a tower that you put balls into and they go around the ramps, and one of those toys with twisty wires and beads that you maneuver around the wires (does that make sense?). Anyway, when she woke up, I brought her out to see the new toys and the bunch of balloons I got for her. She was totally thrilled. The boys and I had so much fun watching her discover everything. She walks around the house pulling her balloons along with her, and the look on her face when she gazes up at them is priceless. And the best part is, we only spent $7 for her birthday, including the balloons!

She wore the dress and sweater that Ashley gave her -- I've been anxiously anticipating the day that they would fit -- it's quite possibly the cutest outfit in the world. Unfortunately, I could not get a single good picture of her. She just won't sit or stand still for more than 2 seconds! So every time I thought I was getting a good shot, it turned out blurry or I missed it entirely. She's a girl on the go for sure. After church and her nap, Marc took some pictures of her outside on the front lawn. He got some really cute ones, but I don't have access to them right now, so I'm just posting some of my sub-standard ones for the sake of immediacy.

Marc's parents came over, as well as Michelle and her kids and Jessie, Timm & Bella. We had a casual dinner, opened presents, and had cake and ice cream. I kept waiting for Eva to become overwhelmed with all the chaos and attention focused on her, but she sailed through it all and seemed to enjoy it -- as if everyone finally decided to lavish all their attention on her like the princess she was meant to be...

Both of her aunts gave her new baby dolls, her grandparents gave her a ride-on baby trike (her legs are too short to reach the floor, but she drags it around with her), and she also got a new book from Michelle, a very cute yellow summer outfit from Grandma & Grandpa, and a pair of darling sandals from Jessie. The only new thing we got for her was a little purse. She liked the wrapping and the presents. It's all good with her.

The cake I made was a bit of failed cake decorating. I was going for polka dots, but the frosting was not as thick as I thought it was, so they morphed into polka blobs (a new and very accurate term coined by Michelle). I made the cake topper to try and salvage a bit of cuteness. Of course Eva didn't care about the polka blobs and just thought that her first piece of birthday cake was worthy of eating with great relish!

All in all, I thought it was a great first birthday. It was at least as fun for me as it was for her. And when all of our guests left, we got all the kids in bed and Marc and I turned in early. It was a fun weekend, but we were totally exhausted.

Oh, I took Eva in for her one-year checkup today. Surprisingly, she has gone down in her percentiles. Here are the stats: 2% for height, 3% for weight. She weighs 18 pounds now, and has only gained 10 ounces since her 9-month visit. She could be the poster girl for walking; I guess doing a lot of walking really does keep your weight in check!

{Happy birthday Katrina! A little belated gift will be coming your way...}

First of all, what are you talking about the cake is awesome. I love the colors you pick, the polka dots, and the "e" on top. Looks as though she enjoyed it as well.

I hear you when it comes to taking their picture. I have bad luck, which is why I always look to Jill. The ones you posted are really great, plus it will be a great story later (like on a layout) how you couldn't get one clear shot of her because she wouldn't stop moving.

I'm certainly glad that I have your blog to keep me up with Eva's growth. I just love seeing the growth in her photos. In my mind she's still a smiling little creature in a baby carrier! I know what you mean about time--I don't understand either how it can simultaneously seem to pass quickly and slowly. I love the cake! It looks like an edible scrapbook page.

BTW, what exactly is the "new calling" you referred to in Jill's blog? You've made me curious.

What a great day! It sounds like you all had so much fun. I can't believe that Eva's a year old either. How time flies! And now you're on to the most exciting parts--increased mobility (can everyone say Slow Down!) and fluent speaking. Such mixed blessings!

I can't believe that it's been a year. It seems like we just had your baby shower. The cake looked adorable. I've always just made cupcakes. So any mom who puts in a little extra effort is incredible.

I love only spending $7. They don't know any different and love everything just the same. I spent about $10 on Jake's birthday and he was still in "hog heaven." So, as they say, "less is sometimes more."

I'm glad that you had fun.

I'm glad that we were able to be there. It was so much fun, and I agree with the passage of time. I can't believe it was a year ago... now I'm just steeling myself up to grasp that Bella's birthday is only 3 weeks away! Another celebration!

I think the cake is awesome. It's gigantic, and the colors and polka-dot blobs are very cute, plus the "e" is painfully cute as well.

She looks darling in all the photos even if she's a on the go, that outfit is so cute it hurts.

She's a lucky baby for sure.

I loved the photos of Eva's birthday! She was a delight and it was such a happy celebration. It couldn't have been better. I'm sure that she can feel the love everyone has for her and each other. Bob and I thought that you looked radiant too, Michelle. You're great! Love Mim

Those photos are too too cute! What was she doing i the first one!? I hope the first year birthday dosen't mean I can no longer refer to her as the baby.....I'm really hoping that you will have another one about the time I retire!! When I get rich and famous ,I will fly over for every milestone! That is one beautiful baby.
